Lead Software Engineer – Java

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Oregon.

📋 Description

• Establish the technical direction for the Data Platform ingest team.

• Take ownership of architectural and design choices for high-throughput distributed systems.

• Guide engineers in tackling complex problems.

• Mentor and develop engineers through code reviews, technical feedback, and career guidance.

• Collaborate with product and partner teams to translate roadmap priorities into actionable technical plans.

• Serve as the team's technical representative and contribute to shared standards and resources.

• Analyze performance, maintainability, and operational cost trade-offs for ingest systems.

• Define, estimate, and oversee complex multi-engineer projects from design to general availability.

• Assess and integrate tools, patterns, technologies, and effective LLM-assisted development practices.

• Regularly write and deploy production code.

• Communicate technical risks and trade-offs to relevant stakeholders.

• Manage operational health, including CI/CD, observability, and incident response.

• Identify and resolve gaps in tools, documentation, and team coverage.

• Develop and manage Kubernetes-based Java services utilizing Kafka and a cell-based architecture, processing millions of messages per second and petabytes of data.

⛳️ Requirements

• 7–10 years of professional software engineering experience, with at least 2 years in a leadership or technical lead role for a team or significant initiative.

• Strong proficiency in Java or a similar OOP language, with the capability to quickly adapt to other languages and frameworks.

• Proven experience running stateful distributed services in production under variable load conditions.

• Skilled in debugging intricate failure states and leading incident remediation efforts.

• Experience in conducting architecture and design reviews for complex systems.

• Practical experience with cloud infrastructure.

• Familiarity with CI/CD tools such as Argo CD.

• Knowledge of event-driven architectures like Kafka.

• Experience with container orchestration technologies such as Kubernetes.

• Expertise in data modeling and query optimization for large-scale relational databases.

• A history of mentoring engineers and providing feedback that enhances team performance.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present a technical case to non-technical stakeholders.
