Lead Software Engineer – Contingent

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Virginia.

📋 Description

• Act as the technical lead for an Agile scrum team operating on a three-week sprint schedule.

• Oversee the design, development, and unit testing of backend services utilizing Python and Django.

• Create and develop REST APIs that facilitate ETL processes, metadata exchange, reporting, and digital content management.

• Execute content identification and selection services with filtering rules and triggers based on manual, scheduled, and event-driven criteria.

• Develop metadata management and transformation services, encompassing normalization, schema validation, quality checks, and reconciliation.

• Establish API integrations and ensure secure content transfer through authentication, retries, monitoring, logging, and traceability.

• Design relational data models and enhance PostgreSQL schemas, queries, and indexes.

• Implement asynchronous processing, queueing, task orchestration, checkpointing, throttling, and idempotent retries.

• Maintain and extend existing Java components.

• Integrate services for malware scanning, checksum validation, quarantine management, and content-routing.

• Implement workflow administration, including approvals, escalations, permissions, queues, and audit logging.

• Design and optimize search and indexing capabilities using Solr and Elasticsearch.

• Operate AWS services and assist in Terraform infrastructure-as-code and Docker deployments.

• Maintain Jenkins and Git continuous integration pipelines, which include automated testing and SonarQube quality stages.

• Create unit tests and collaborate with government QA teams on acceptance, integration, and accessibility testing.

• Support remediation efforts for WCAG 2.1 accessibility compliance.

• Engage in Agile ceremonies and document work in JIRA.

• Mentor a mid-level developer and uphold coding standards.

• Contribute to documentation related to lifecycle, design, security, and authorization.

• Manage Controlled Unclassified Information in client-managed environments.

• Assist with project closeout and transition activities.

⛳️ Requirements

• At least 5 years of professional software development experience, including roles as a technical lead or senior developer on an Agile team.

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.

• Proven ability to lead technical designs, conduct peer code reviews, and mentor mid-level developers.

• Extensive hands-on experience with production backend services and REST APIs using Python and Django.

• Strong proficiency in PostgreSQL, including data modeling, schema design, query optimization, and migrations.

• Working knowledge of Java.

• Practical experience with Solr and Elasticsearch, focusing on index design and query optimization.

• Experience in designing microservices and REST APIs with authentication, authorization, versioning, validation, and error handling.

• Familiarity with building ETL or data integration pipelines that include transformation, validation, reconciliation, and error recovery.

• Hands-on experience in AWS application development and deployment.

• Experience with Terraform for infrastructure-as-code.

• Knowledge of maintaining Jenkins continuous integration pipelines and using Git for source control.

• Understanding of content-addressable storage concepts and patterns.

• Proficient in HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript.

• Experience working in Agile and Scrum environments, utilizing JIRA and story-point estimation.

• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills suitable for collaboration in a fully remote work environment.
