Lead Satellite Mechanical Design Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Oversee a team tasked with the mechanical design of the entire satellite system, which includes bus structure, equipment accommodation, and payload accommodation, utilizing CAD and PLM tools.

• Conceptualize, develop, model, and test satellite hardware, encompassing structures, mechanisms, electronics, and communication systems, from initial concept to launch.

• Ensure that designs satisfy performance, size, weight, power, volume, and reliability criteria for both launch and on-orbit conditions.

• Create and maintain comprehensive system-level mechanical design documentation, such as interface control drawings, manufacturing drawings, and testing procedures.

• Establish, uphold, and enhance engineering drawing, specification, and design-for-manufacturability standards.

• Prepare and deliver information for design and readiness reviews to management and colleagues.

• Diagnose anomalies and failures, conduct root-cause analyses, and drive towards resolution.

• Collaborate with manufacturing and production teams to convey design information effectively and clearly.

• Assess and advocate for new technologies and methodologies.


⛳️ Requirements

• A bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related technical discipline.

• At least 15 years of practical experience in mechanical design, integration, and testing of satellites.

• Strong technical expertise in designing satellite assemblies for launch and on-orbit environments, as well as design for manufacturability.

• Proficient in standard analytical tools, FEA, and classical structural analysis techniques for sizing and trade studies.

• Proven experience in leading small engineering teams through complete design cycles.

• Innovative and creative mindset, with a readiness to challenge existing practices.

• Capability to collaborate within a multidisciplinary engineering team.

• Ability to lead a small team while managing assignments independently.

• Adaptability and flexibility in a fast-moving, dynamic environment.

• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English.

• Proficient in CAD software; Siemens NX is preferred, with CATIA, SolidWorks, or CREO also acceptable.

• Familiarity with PLM systems for design release and configuration management.

• Experience with FEA and standard structural analysis software.

• Capability to work in a conventional office setting and use a computer for extended durations.

• Willingness to travel 25%–40% of the time.
