Lead Engineer – Thermal Dynamics

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Utah.

📋 Description

• Support the System Engineer in the development of the program's system architecture and technical strategy.

• Perform thermal and controls analysis, including testing and evaluation for system model correlation and compliance with performance requirements.

• Identify and manage technical risks associated with thermal performance on the program.

• Act as the technical lead for modeling and analysis efforts.

• Establish measurable and achievable objectives and coordinate modeling and analysis tasks with other engineering teams.

• Collaborate with the Systems Engineer and Program Manager to implement modeling, analysis, and testing development.

• Oversee thermal and performance technical requirements management.

• Aid in the traceability, decomposition, derivation, verification, and validation of requirements.

• Break down high-level requirements into detailed specifications for internal teams, components, and suppliers.

• Investigate and suggest investments or modifications in technologies, methodologies, tools, procedures, equipment, and systems.

• Engage and collaborate with customers and suppliers throughout the design development process.

• Review and authorize documentation needed for the transition from prototype to production.

• Provide engineering support for troubleshooting and diagnosing underperforming products, including Root Cause and Corrective Action (RCCA) and lessons learned.

• Execute other assigned duties as necessary.

⛳️ Requirements

• A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and 8-10 years of relevant experience.

• Relevant advanced degrees, such as an MS or PhD, may be considered to fulfill a part of the industry experience requirement.

• Proficient knowledge of aerospace technical fields, including requirements management, technical verification and validation methodologies, mechanical design, materials, modeling/documentation, structural analysis, electrical systems, system controls, embedded controls, development testing and analysis, and qualification analysis and testing.

• Extensive knowledge in thermal fluid sciences, including fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer.

• Experience and expertise in analyzing and modeling thermal fluid systems, including nonlinear, gradient, and gradient-free numerical iterative solvers and optimization techniques.

• Familiarity with aerospace requirements management methodologies and processes, including traceability, decomposition, derivation, verification, and validation.

• A functional understanding of key aircraft systems, such as environmental control systems, powerplant, electrical systems, hydraulics, controls, avionics, power generation, and structures.

• Experience with Vapor Cycle Systems (VCS), Liquid Cooling Systems (LCS), and/or Air Cycle Systems (ACS).

• Modeling experience and knowledge of standard VCS, LCS, and ACS components, including heat exchangers, pumps, compressors, turbines, fans, valves, motors and motor controllers, and water collectors/separators.

• Familiarity with environmental testing and qualification standards like MIL-STD-810 and DO-160.

• Basic CAD skills in NX.

• Proficient coding/scripting experience, preferably in MATLAB/Simulink or Python.

• Expertise in building, utilizing, correlating, and maintaining steady-state and dynamic system models, as well as architecting high-level controls.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills.

• Ability to document, plan, market, and implement programs.

• Must fulfill U.S. Person status requirements for access to U.S. export-controlled information: must be a U.S. lawful permanent resident, U.S. citizen, or granted asylee/refugee status.

• Must have legal authorization to work in the United States.
