Lead Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Lead a team of AI Tutors tasked with providing training data and evaluations for SpaceXAI’s models.

• Take ownership of the complete quality and delivery for assigned Human Data projects.

• Conduct personal reviews of work for accuracy, consistency, adherence to guidelines, and production of high-quality data.

• Guide, coach, and manage the performance of AI Tutors, including conducting performance reviews, maintaining records, creating action plans, facilitating shadow sessions, and pursuing continuous improvement.

• Supervise and engage in labeling and reviewing tasks.

• Manage taxonomies and ensure quality assurance processes are upheld.

• Identify and address operational bottlenecks while implementing process enhancements.

• Monitor performance using KPI dashboards, which include quality metrics, throughput, and send-back rates.

• Develop, update, and present training materials, practice tasks, and certification benchmarks.

• Oversee certifications and workforce adjustments.

• Collaborate with Human Data Managers, Team Leads, and Engineering to convert model needs into labeling strategies and requirements.

• Mentor and nurture talent while upholding accountability and managing disciplinary actions when necessary.

• Document outcomes and report on project status, risks, and results.

• Represent tutors and promote collaboration throughout the Human Data organization.

⛳️ Requirements

• A Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Civil, Environmental, or a closely related engineering field.

• A minimum of 2 years of professional experience in engineering practice, such as design, analysis, testing, R&D, or systems integration, OR a Master's degree or higher in an engineering or engineering-related field.

• Basic understanding of AI and machine learning concepts and the impact of high-quality training data on model performance.

• Candidates must reside in one of the countries where SpaceXAI has a physical office; remote work options are available.

• Preferred: advanced degree or professional licensure (PE or FE/EIT).

• Preferred: experience with data quality metrics, annotation processes, and guideline-driven workflows.

• Preferred: experience across various engineering disciplines.

• Preferred: experience in performance management, coaching, training program development, and certification frameworks.

• Preferred: at least 1 year of hands-on experience in data labeling, annotation, AI training/evaluation, content quality, or similar operational fields.

• Preferred: professional experience in building scalable, high-performance technology applications.

• Preferred: prior experience leading small teams in data labeling, annotation, or related operations.

• Preferred: capability to manage multiple concurrent projects and prioritize effectively.

• Preferred: a proven track record in reviewing domain work, ensuring data quality, and enhancing operational processes.

• Preferred: proficiency in data analysis and relevant tools; SQL knowledge is a plus.

• Preferred: experience in managing mixed employment types or distributed teams.

• Preferred: excellent verbal and written communication abilities.

• Preferred: strong organizational skills, attention to detail, proactive problem-solving, and a mindset geared towards continuous improvement.

• Preferred: strategic thinking paired with hands-on execution.

• Preferred: specialty or strong domain expertise in Finance, STEM, Coding/Software Engineering, or other technical fields.
