Lead Device Software Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Pennsylvania.

📋 Description

• Take full ownership of the device software system from start to finish, establishing the architecture, segmenting it into well-defined workstreams, and facilitating rapid, iterative delivery.

• Develop production code and assign tasks to a team of three firmware engineers.

• Report directly to the Director of Electrical Engineering.

• Create the IslandDER digital interface for secure integration with home batteries and Vehicle-to-Home solutions.

• Oversee voltage and current monitoring, relay control, safety checks, and secure communication with third-party devices and the ConnectDER cloud.

• Manage Data Acquisition, Control, Communication, and Integration subsystems.

• Design safety-critical software, including safety cases, FMEA, and NRTL certification.

• Develop and implement revenue-grade metering systems, encompassing data acquisition, signal processing, and calibration.

• Collaborate with electrical engineering on requirements, board bring-up, cross-boundary debugging, hardware testability, and safety considerations.

• Ensure secure firmware updates, incorporating secure boot, code signing, and key management.

• Maintain up-to-date CI/CD practices and ensure code is testable, transitioning systems from prototype to mass production.


⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science, with over 7 years of experience in firmware engineering and a proven record of delivering new products at scale.

• Strong focus on system design and documentation, including comprehensive technical documentation and design diagrams.

• Proven experience in steering complex safety certification processes, such as IEC 61508, IEC 60730, or UL 1998, to successful completion.

• Demonstrated technical leadership in directing project strategies, defining workstreams, and delivering code.

• Expert-level proficiency in C, C++, and/or Rust programming languages.

• Extensive experience in debugging embedded systems using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and JTAG/SWD tools.

• In-depth bare-metal/RTOS firmware experience on contemporary 32-bit microcontrollers, focusing on low-level architecture and multi-core memory optimization.

• Familiarity with ARM Cortex-M or comparable architectures.

• Advanced utilization of AI coding agents while maintaining ownership of deployed decisions.

• Ability to iterate rapidly, assess effort against business value, and articulate complex requirements to a diverse range of stakeholders.

• Proof of work authorization is mandatory.

• Preferred: Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science.

• Preferred: Background in navigating safety-critical software through NRTL certification.

• Preferred: Experience with Matter/Thread device commissioning, including SPAKE2+/PASE and setup-code or QR pairing.

• Preferred: Knowledge of I2C, UART, SPI, CAN/CAN-FD, Ethernet, Make, CMake, test automation, and CI/CD practices.

• Preferred: Experience with embedded TCP/IP networking, lwIP, WireGuard, or similar secure tunnels on embedded platforms.

• Preferred: Skills in reverse-engineering CAN protocols or creating custom evaluation tools.

• Preferred: Experience in configuring and utilizing RTOS for multi-threaded, timing-critical applications; familiarity with PX5 or ThreadX.

• Preferred: Knowledge of code-signing/PKI systems for firmware, secure boot verification, key rotation, and revocation.

• Preferred: Understanding of UL 1741/IEEE 1547, UL 3141, UL 2900, and ANSI C12.1 standards.
