Lead Backup & Recovery Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Oversee the architecture for enterprise data protection in both on-premises and cloud settings.

• Establish the technical direction for data protection and recovery initiatives.

• Create backup policies, recovery objectives, data lifecycle strategies, governance frameworks, and standards.

• Manage recoverability assurance, platform strategies, and vendor selections.

• Direct backup platform migrations, including sequencing, risk assessment, and cutover authority.

• Lead the enterprise data protection strategy across on-premises, hybrid, and multi-cloud environments.

• Design and implement robust, ransomware-resistant backup and recovery solutions.

• Develop protection patterns for virtual, physical, database, containerized, SaaS, and cloud-native workloads.

• Create disaster recovery architectures, replication strategies, failover/failback processes, and recovery testing programs.

• Act as the technical authority during disaster recovery exercises, audits, major incidents, and recovery events.

• Collaborate with teams from Infrastructure, Cloud, Security, Storage, Database, and Applications.

• Define governance, compliance, and security controls that support SOX, HIPAA, ISO 27001, and internal standards.

• Manage resource planning, performance management, growth forecasting, licensing strategies, and cost optimization.

• Establish reporting systems, dashboards, indicators, and service-level metrics.

• Promote automation initiatives across the backup infrastructure.

• Lead vendor relationships, roadmap discussions, proof-of-concept evaluations, and technology recommendations.

• Provide technical leadership, mentoring, design reviews, and escalation support.

• Maintain active involvement in architecture validation, complex problem-solving, platform upgrades, and critical implementations.

• Present findings, risk assessments, and program statuses to senior leadership, IT steering committees, and audit and risk functions.

• Develop capability enhancement plans and review team designs.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 8 years of hands-on engineering experience with enterprise backup and recovery platforms, including time in leadership roles such as lead, principal, or architect.

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience, or a combination of education and experience.

• Proven experience leading enterprise-scale end-to-end migrations of backup systems, with responsibility for cutover and validation.

• Experience overseeing data protection architecture across a large, diverse estate.

• Proficient in establishing governance frameworks, standards, and SLA reporting.

• Experience in vendor selection processes, including RFP and RFI development, PoC evaluation, and formal recommendations.

• Background in requirements gathering, gap analysis, and formal solution documentation.

• In-depth knowledge of cloud backup and cloud storage tiering with at least one major provider (AWS, Azure, OCI, or GCP).

• Familiarity with SAN, NAS, object storage, snapshots, and replication technologies.

• Comprehensive understanding of disaster recovery frameworks, RTO and RPO design, and DR testing methodologies.

• Experience designing immutable, ransomware-resilient, and air-gapped or isolated recovery architectures.

• Familiar with ITIL practices and formal change management processes.

• Ability to effectively communicate technical risks, options, and recommendations to senior management and steering committees.

• Preferred vendor certifications in enterprise backup and recovery platforms.

• Preferred professional-level cloud certifications.

• Preferred ITIL certification.
