Lead Architect – Project Manager

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Hungary.

📋 Description

• Define and design the target architecture for the Renovate solution.

• Create a scalable operating model that supports tens of thousands of GitLab repositories.

• Architect self-hosted Renovate, including distributed workers/runners, job scheduling, and caching mechanisms.

• Develop solutions for handling GitLab API and external registry rate-limit challenges.

• Implement automated repository discovery and onboarding processes.

• Define and maintain a centralized, version-controlled set of Renovate configurations and shared presets.

• Establish strategies for updates, grouping rules, time windows, and auto-merge policies.

• Ensure adherence to security and compliance standards, including secure credential management and least-privilege access principles.

• Define and implement prioritization processes for security-related and CVE-driven updates.

• Establish systems for monitoring, logging, dashboards, and operational KPIs.

• Plan and coordinate the rollout from pilot phases through multiple rollout waves to achieve full coverage.

• Oversee project planning, roadmap creation, prioritization, and rollout management.

• Coordinate with stakeholders across GitLab platform operations, Security, development teams, and management.

• Conduct technical reviews and make critical architectural decisions.

• Mentor and support engineers throughout the implementation process.

• Contribute to documentation, guidelines, and initiatives for developer enablement and training.

• Engage hands-on with prototypes and address critical technical implementation questions.

⛳️ Requirements

• Several years of experience as a Solution Architect, Lead Architect, or Senior DevOps Engineer.

• Extensive experience with GitLab, particularly in large-scale environments.

• Practical knowledge of Renovate or a similar automated dependency management solution.

• Strong background in DevOps and CI/CD practices.

• Experience in designing scalable, distributed, and highly automated solutions.

• Solid grasp of infrastructure and platform architecture.

• Familiarity with APIs, authentication, credential management, and security best practices.

• Experience in monitoring, logging, and observability practices.

• Proven skills in project management and stakeholder engagement.

• Ability to function effectively as both a technical lead and project manager.

• Hands-on and solution-oriented approach.

• Proficient in English.

• Experience with Kubernetes and containerization is a plus.

• Cloud infrastructure experience is a plus.

• Experience in delivering large-scale rollout or migration projects involving a significant number of repositories is a plus.
