Lead AI Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Utah.

📋 Description

• Define the roadmap and architectural standards for AI engineering across the organization.

• Lead decisions regarding build vs. buy vs. integrate for AI systems and platforms, providing clear rationale.

• Assess emerging tools, frameworks, and models, offering recommendations to leadership.

• Act as the primary technical escalation contact for complex challenges in AI/ML system design.

• Design AI solutions for Veracity's digital insurance platform that caters to enterprise customers.

• Create systems that are scalable, reliable, and cost-efficient for production environments.

• Establish LLMOps practices, including evaluation and regression suites, observability for cost and quality, versioned prompts and configurations, staged rollouts and rollbacks, and production guardrails.

• Ensure seamless integration of AI systems with the existing product and engineering infrastructure.

• Collaborate with Product and Engineering leadership to align AI capabilities with business objectives.

• Provide technical direction on resource allocation and cross-functional collaboration.

• Simplify complex technical concepts for executives and business stakeholders.

• Challenge methods that may jeopardize the long-term health of the system.

• Advocate for AI-assisted coding practices and developer tools throughout the engineering team.

• Establish standards for responsible AI development, including guardrails, evaluation frameworks, and security measures.

• Promote continuous improvement in the creation and deployment of AI-powered features.

⛳️ Requirements

• A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related quantitative field, or equivalent practical experience.

• Over 5 years of software engineering experience, with a significant portion focused on production AI/ML or LLM/GenAI systems.

• At least 2 years of experience in developing production LLM/GenAI and agentic systems.

• Proficiency in AI-assisted coding tools and the ability to establish organization-wide standards, evaluations, and guardrails for AI-generated code.

• Proven history of redesigning existing business processes with AI at the center, successfully shipped to production with outcome accountability.

• Experience in production environments with LLM/GenAI and agentic systems, including agent orchestration, tool calling, RAG, and structured outputs.

• Strong judgment regarding appropriate versus inappropriate uses of AI in insurance, ensuring policy binding, money movement, and compliance flows are deterministic, auditable, and governed by humans.

• Experience in making and communicating build vs. buy vs. integrate decisions at an organizational level.

• Proficient in Python and the contemporary GenAI application stack, including agent and orchestration frameworks, model-provider SDKs, vector databases, and evaluation tools.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Preferred: Proven experience in redesigning legacy processes with the flexibility to modify underlying platform architecture.

• Preferred: Experience in enterprise or regulated domains, ideally within insurance or financial services.

• Preferred: Technical lead or principal engineer experience with a broad influence across the organization.

• Preferred: Experience collaborating closely with product engineering teams in a dual-track agile framework.

• Preferred: Familiarity with AI cost management, observability, and governance frameworks.
