Junior Data Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Virginia.

📋 Description

• Develop, configure, and sustain application components such as intake forms, role-based dashboards, workflow routing, notifications, and audit logging.

• Design, construct, and manage relational and list-based data structures that facilitate workflow routing, threshold logic, versioning, and historical reporting.

• Create and maintain data pipelines for the ingestion, validation, transformation, and loading of data from Excel, CSV, form submissions, and upstream enterprise systems.

• Write, optimize, and troubleshoot SQL queries and stored logic to ensure application functionality, reporting, and data quality checks.

• Develop and support REST API integrations and JSON data exchanges between the application and enterprise systems.

• Construct reporting views, dashboards, and automated document or summary outputs for request status, SLA compliance, and enterprise performance metrics.

• Convert business epics, user stories, and acceptance criteria into actionable functionality.

• Engage in backlog refinement, estimation, sprint planning, and daily stand-ups.

• Conduct data validation, create and maintain test data, support unit and regression testing, and assist with defect triage and resolution.

• Utilize Git-based version control and participate in peer code reviews, branching, merging practices, and deployment and release activities.

• Produce and maintain technical documentation, including data dictionaries, schema and configuration documentation, and runbooks.

• Ensure compliance with federal security, privacy, records management, and Section 508 accessibility requirements.

• Collaborate with business analysts, product owners, testers, and client subject matter experts.

• Communicate progress, risks, and blockers to the technical lead and project manager.

• Stay updated on development, data engineering, and platform capabilities.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, data science, information systems, software engineering, or a related field.

• 3+ years of experience in software development, data engineering, or a closely related technical role.

• Relevant internship, co-op, research, or substantive academic or personal project experience will be considered.

• Proficiency in Python.

• Proficiency in SQL, including a solid understanding of relational database design and data modeling.

• Experience in building or consuming REST APIs and working with structured data formats like JSON.

• Familiarity with Git-based version control and collaborative development workflows.

• Ability to interpret and work from written requirements, user stories, and acceptance criteria.

• Capability to produce clear technical documentation and explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

• Willingness and proven ability to quickly learn new platforms and tools, including low-code development environments.

• Ability to work independently or as part of a cross-functional team in a remote or hybrid environment.

• Eligibility to obtain a Public Trust Clearance.
