Joint Use Designer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Develop construction documents, which include plan and profile drawings, for both overhead and underground electric distribution, fiber optic, and telecommunications systems.

• Prepare make-ready work for joint-use initiatives.

• Assist in engineering and project cost estimations as well as execution timelines.

• Provide on-site support during construction activities.

• Conduct quality reviews of work produced by others and ensure compliance with QA/QC processes.

• Assess equipment loading, such as transformers and pole structural loading, to ensure designs are cost-effective, safe, and reliable.

• Implement NESC standards, client specifications, and relevant federal, state, and local guidelines in engineering designs.

• Analyze data gathered from the field, including imagery, and update relevant software for design execution.

• Utilize client-specific software and equipment in the engineering design workflow, including managing new attachment permitting processes.

• Complete tasks within project timelines and budgets, while keeping management informed of progress.

• Engage with clients to identify cost-effective engineering design solutions.

• Provide documentation and support for accounting to ensure projects remain within budget and are accurately tracked.

• Document notes and employ measuring tools to identify, inspect, and log field data systematically.

• Attend client meetings as necessary and interact with the public, landowners, and operators.

• Visually assess, inspect, and document equipment and construction scenarios, including rights-of-way.

• Coordinate with colleagues and clients to reach consensus on engineering design solutions.

• Conduct fieldwork throughout the engineering design process, which may involve driving, walking, navigating various terrains, and working under diverse weather conditions.

• Be prepared for overnight or extended travel based on project assignments.

⛳️ Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED is essential, along with 3+ years of experience in fieldwork, construction environments, drafting, utility work, or technical design.

• An Associate Degree in engineering technology, construction, drafting technology, or a related field, with 0-2 years of experience and a keen interest in fieldwork or surveying, is acceptable.

• A Bachelor’s degree in engineering, engineering technology, construction, GIS, drafting, or a related technical field is preferred, with 0-2 years of experience.

• Candidates with experience in DDS and Katapult are highly favored.

• Previous experience in utility design or make-ready design is desirable.

• Ability to interpret engineering drawings and schematics is preferred.

• Familiarity with electrical distribution assets and/or communication equipment construction is advantageous.

• Experience with pole loading software (e.g., Spida Calc, O-Calc, Pole Foreman, or Katapult) or other construction modeling software such as AutoCAD is beneficial.

• Knowledge of utility or joint-use software (e.g., SPANS, NJUNS, IkeGPS) for make-ready engineering and construction is an asset.

• Understanding of utility distribution design standards and industry practices is required.

• Proficiency in using design software packages is necessary.

• Acquaintance with design and review methodologies for engineering drawings and deliverables is essential.

• Knowledge of Safe Work Practices and PPE applications is expected.

• An organized approach to managing project data is crucial.

• Ability to prioritize tasks across multiple projects and effectively communicate project updates is essential.

• Computer literacy, including proficiency in general Microsoft Office applications, design software, and business enterprise systems is required.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills across all organizational levels are essential.

• Problem-solving abilities and practical reasoning skills are necessary.

• Reliable transportation and a valid driver's license with insurance are mandatory.

• Capability to pass a fit-for-duty examination is required.

• Ability to work both remotely and in an office environment as necessary.

• Must successfully complete a post-offer drug (including marijuana) and alcohol test in accordance with Federal regulations and agree to random testing as a condition of ongoing employment.

• Willingness to travel overnight or for extended periods based on project assignments is necessary.

• Must be able to work in all weather conditions and in residential, commercial, and industrial settings as required.

• Ability to endure frequent driving, standing, and walking several miles per day, navigating on foot or by vehicle, and lifting objects weighing up to 20 pounds in complex terrains is essential.
