HV Electrical Engineer – Substation Design

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Implement all technical components of AC power substation projects under the supervision of a Lead Engineer.

• Create high-voltage substation general arrangements and layouts.

• Develop plan and elevation drawings, bills of materials, high-voltage bus configurations, cable and wiring layouts, grounding designs, and control building layouts.

• Conduct relevant engineering calculations.

• Collaborate on overall design with other disciplines.

• Provide basic single-line diagrams and schematics, and specify relay protection and control requirements.

• Draft specifications for high-voltage equipment and generate material purchase request forms.

• Assess vendor quotes for substation equipment.

• Work alongside engineers and designers to achieve project specifications, budget constraints, and timeline goals.

• Liaise with sourcing and project teams regarding technical issues.

• Interact with internal and external team members, including engineers, designers, draftsmen, project managers, and support teams.

• Prepare proposals, including technical specifications, material estimates, vendor quotation support, drawing requirements, clarifications, exceptions, and technical answers.

• Assist in project documentation and continuous improvement efforts.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited university or college (BSEE preferred).

• Minimum of 1 year of experience in Transmission & Distribution substation engineering.

• Willingness and ability to travel up to 20%, including internationally.

• Professional Engineer (PE) license or intent to take necessary exams to obtain licensure.

• Familiarity with IEEE and ANSI standards and codes such as NEC and NESC.

• Proficient in design calculations for primary and secondary equipment, including battery sizing and DC system component selection, power transformer and circuit breaker selection, circuit protection, control and power cable selection and rating, bus, fittings, insulator and arrester selection, ground grid design, and lightning protection.

• Understanding of civil engineering and structural design requirements related to substations.

• Experience with field-testing and commissioning while maintaining safe work practices.

• Capability in electrical and mechanical troubleshooting.

• Ability to manage multiple projects at once.

• Strong computer skills, including programming and design automation.

• Familiarity with AutoCAD, BIM, and Revit is highly desirable.

• Effective communication and interpersonal skills.

• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

• Successful completion of a drug screening, if applicable.
