Group Transport Manager

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.

📋 Description

• Provide leadership and assurance organization-wide regarding transport compliance and operator licensing

• Direct Biffa’s interactions with the DVSA, Traffic Commissioners, and various transport regulatory agencies

• Assist and coordinate responses to regulatory investigations, Public Inquiries, Preliminary Hearings, audits, and enforcement actions

• Collaborate with divisional and operational leaders to enhance accountability for transport compliance across locations

• Offer expert advice on drivers’ hours, working time, tachographs, vehicle roadworthiness, load security, and the safe operation of vehicles

• Analyze compliance data, KPIs, audits, and incident trends to pinpoint risks and promote sustainable improvements

• Mentor and support transport managers, traffic teams, and operational leaders, converting complex legislation into actionable steps

• Provide strategic oversight of driver training and competency in partnership with the Training Manager

• Lead and assist investigations into transport incidents, infringements, and compliance failures, ensuring effective corrective measures

• Advocate for road safety, driver wellbeing, legal compliance, and operational discipline in daily decision-making

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive experience as a transport, logistics, or fleet professional in a complex, multi-site setting

• National Certificate of Professional Competence in Road Haulage, or an equivalent transport management qualification

• Comprehensive understanding of DVSA enforcement, OCRS principles, Traffic Commissioner expectations, and operator licence compliance

• In-depth knowledge of UK transport legislation, including drivers’ hours, working time, tachographs, vehicle maintenance, roadworthiness, and load security

• Demonstrated experience in managing transport compliance risk within a complex operational framework

• Experience working with the DVSA and Traffic Commissioners, including regulatory audits, enforcement actions, Public Inquiries, or Preliminary Hearings

• Background in overseeing driver training, competency, and assessment frameworks

• Proven ability to influence operational leaders, transport teams, drivers, and senior stakeholders

• Capability to utilize data, audits, and KPIs to enhance safety, compliance, and operational performance

• Credible and confident communicator who can constructively challenge, build trusted relationships, and influence at all levels

• Experience in waste management, environmental services, utilities, construction logistics, or another safety-critical fleet environment is advantageous
