Founding CTO – New Healthcare Startup

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Virginia.

📋 Description

• Take charge of an active product.

• Enhance an existing beta version that already serves real users to improve its speed, reliability, and capabilities. Evaluate the current architecture, address any gaps, and build upon a foundation that is already providing value.

• Design the Health Intelligence Engine.

• Advance and deepen the backend infrastructure, APIs, and data models that deliver personalized health insights. Create systems that integrate lab results, wearable data, symptoms, and medical history into scalable actionable intelligence.

• Develop and enhance data integration pipelines.

• Expand robust ETL pipelines that collect data from various sources such as lab providers (Quest, LabCorp), wearables (Oura, Apple Health, Whoop, Garmin), medical records, and user-entered data. Ensure data integrity, security, and compliance with HIPAA regulations.

• Create AI-powered features.

• Implement and enhance conversational AI health check-ins, treatment recommendation engines, and predictive models that provide insights and guide users through their health journeys. Collaborate with Claude and other AI tools to expedite development.

• Ensure security and compliance.

• Prioritize HIPAA compliance in the development process. Implement and uphold encryption, access controls, audit logging, and security best practices for managing sensitive health information.

• Utilize AI-native development tools.

• Leverage Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, and other AI-assisted development tools to enhance building speed. Embrace vibe coding and rapid prototyping to transition swiftly from concept to functioning product.

• Provide technical leadership.

• As the team grows, mentor and manage additional engineers. Contribute to establishing engineering culture, practices, and standards. This position offers a clear trajectory toward engineering leadership.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 10 years of software engineering experience, with a proven record of developing and delivering complex products. You have worked across the technology stack and can manage technical decisions end-to-end.

• Strong expertise in backend and infrastructure. Extensive experience with system architecture, APIs, databases, and the creation of scalable, reliable systems. Proficient in Python, Node.js, or similar technologies.

• Experience with health data and integrations. Familiarity with lab data, EHR systems, wearable APIs, or healthcare interoperability standards (HL7, FHIR). You comprehend the complexities associated with health data.

• Background in data pipeline and ETL processes. You have developed pipelines that ingest, transform, and normalize data from multiple sources. Experience with healthcare data integration is a significant advantage.

• Proficiency in cloud infrastructure. Practical experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure. You can design and deploy secure, compliant infrastructure.

• Experience in implementing AI/ML. You have developed products utilizing AI—whether recommendation systems, NLP, conversational AI, or predictive models. Familiarity with LLMs and prompt engineering is beneficial.

• A mindset focused on security and compliance. You understand HIPAA regulations and can create systems that safeguard sensitive health data from the outset.

• Comfortable with AI-native development workflows. You are adept at using Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub, or similar tools to expedite your work.

• Preference for experience with Python and Typescript. Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS, JCP, etc.

• Experience in healthcare technology and knowledge of health data privacy regulations (HIPAA, state telemedicine laws).

• A startup mindset. You thrive in early-stage settings where you take on multiple roles, act swiftly, and assume ownership. You are invigorated by uncertainty and building from the ground up.
