This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Perform forensic analyses of firearms, ammunition, and ballistic evidence, which includes bullets, cartridge cases, and gunshot residue.
• Investigate shooting incidents by conducting trajectory analyses, determining distances, and reconstructing events based on physical evidence.
• Evaluate the functionality of firearms, their safety mechanisms, and identify any potential defects or malfunctions.
• Examine case materials such as scene evidence, autopsy reports, police reports, and forensic lab findings to understand firearm-related events.
• Review and validate procedures for evidence handling, including chain of custody, laboratory analysis, and testing protocols.
• Evaluate use-of-force scenarios involving firearms, such as officer-involved shootings, self-defense claims, and accidental discharges.
• Collaborate with legal teams to assess firearms evidence, pinpoint inconsistencies, and bolster case strategies.
• Create comprehensive expert reports and professional opinions grounded in recognized methodologies for firearms examination and forensic science principles.
• Deliver expert witness testimony in depositions and trials, simplifying complex firearms and ballistics findings into clear, defensible opinions.
• Keep abreast of advancements in firearms technology, ballistic analysis techniques, forensic standards, and legal precedents relevant to firearms cases.
• A minimum of 15 years of professional experience in Firearms Examination, Ballistics Analysis, Law Enforcement or Military Firearms Specialist roles, Crime Lab Forensics, or related fields.
• Preferred Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Forensic Science, Criminal Justice, Ballistics, or a related discipline.
• Significant experience in firearms examination, ballistics analysis, or forensic firearms investigations.
• Comprehensive knowledge of firearms and forensic standards, encompassing toolmark identification, trajectory analysis, gunshot residue testing, and evidence comparison techniques.
• Experience with laboratory testing protocols, firearms databases (e.g., NIBIN), and forensic analysis tools.
• Strong understanding of firearm safety standards and the reconstruction of shooting incidents.
• Proven ability to analyze firearms-related evidence and present findings in investigative or legal contexts.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, capable of articulating complex forensic concepts to attorneys, juries, and non-technical audiences.
• Prior experience as an expert witness or in courtroom testimony is preferred.
• Relevant certifications or training in firearms examination, forensic science, or ballistics analysis are highly preferred.
• 1099 independent contractor arrangement.
