Fire Investigator – Part Time

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Investigate and assess the origin and causes of fire and explosion incidents in residential, commercial, and industrial settings according to NFPA 921 and 1033.

• Gather evidence and document the scenes in compliance with NFPA 921 and 1033.

• Capture photographs of incident locations and record details as needed or requested.

• Preserve equipment and components, storing collected evidence for further assessment and review, pending written instructions from clients.

• Conduct interviews with property owners, occupants, tenants, witnesses, responding and investigating fire service personnel, and local officials.

• Survey neighborhoods to locate potential witnesses and document their statements.

• Identify, document, and evaluate compliance with applicable codes for installed fire suppression and detection systems.

• Research failure modes and code requirements, providing recommendations for stakeholders.

• Create accurate, clear, thorough, and concise reports and letters detailing the cause and origin of damage for clients.

• Implement established policies, procedures, and processes while exercising sound judgment in unique or complex situations.

• Submit reports and documentation promptly, adhering to client standards and expectations.

• Collaborate proactively with multidisciplinary teams on large and intricate assignments.

• Provide assistance to coworkers as necessary and learn from colleagues and supervisors.

• Foster and maintain established relationships with current clients and consultants.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 5 years of experience as a fire investigator.

• An ideal background includes a mix of public and private sector experience.

• A combination of education and relevant experience will be taken into account.

• IAAI CFI certification is required or the ability to obtain it within 6 months of hire.

• NAFI-CFEI certification is necessary.

• Must be bondable.

• Eligibility for licensing as a private investigator where applicable.

• May need to pass written examinations for licensing in certain jurisdictions.

• Strong interpersonal and customer service skills are essential.

• Capability to work in catastrophic environments, including the aftermath of natural disasters and severe weather events, for extended periods.

• Must be able to operate a motor vehicle safely for work purposes.

• Experience with commercial and industrial facilities is preferred.

• Familiarity with law firms and insurance companies is advantageous.

• A Bachelor of Science degree in a relevant field is preferred.
