Finance & Accounting Lead

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Revise the P&L to accurately reflect Tern's business operations and provide unit economics for each transaction.

• Take ownership of the financial model based on the P&L.

• Establish revenue recognition policies across all business sectors.

• Supervise the month-end closing process.

• Manage the burn policy, including categorization and reconciliation of P&L expenses with cash outflows.

• Draft accounting requirements for payment and operations products.

• Work in collaboration with the Finance Product Lead and engineering team to execute accounting requirements.

• Identify and mitigate tax exposure for new business lines.

• Act as the accounting subject-matter expert for Tern and its clientele.

• Report directly to the Chief of Staff and collaborate on supplier economics and investor relations activities.

• Serve as the company's accounting authority for both internal and external inquiries.


⛳️ Requirements

• In-depth technical accounting knowledge with the ability to interpret accounting standards.

• Previous experience as the first or one of the earliest accounting hires at one or two startups.

• Proven track record in developing a chart of accounts, overseeing month-end closings, and implementing controls.

• Familiarity with revenue recognition principles under ASC 606.

• Experience in determining gross-vs-net and principal-vs-agent distinctions.

• Background in accounting for payments and marketplaces, including aspects like held funds, payouts, chargebacks, interchange, and processing fees.

• Experience in crafting accounting requirements for engineering teams.

• Ownership of month-end closing processes.

• Capability to work independently without a defined process and take initiative on unassigned tasks.

• CPA certification is a plus.

• Experience in travel tech, commission structures, supplier statements, and trust accounting is advantageous.

• Background in institutional fundraising and due diligence is beneficial.

• Experience in transitioning from outsourced bookkeeping to in-house accounting is a bonus.

• Multi-entity or multi-currency accounting experience is an advantage.
