Engineering Project Manager – Substation Engineering

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Oversee the scope, timeline, and budget for assigned projects from initiation to completion.

• Analyze substation contracts, proposals, and scope documents to ensure the delivered scope aligns with expectations.

• Manage several concurrent substation and interconnection projects, including those with complex multidisciplinary components.

• Coordinate internal engineering teams and external subconsultants.

• Handle submittals, RFIs, and change requests until resolution is achieved.

• Proactively identify project risks, changes in scope, and schedule impacts, facilitating timely decision-making.

• Prepare, monitor, and submit monthly project invoices.

• Utilize established project management protocols while exercising independent professional judgment.

• Act as the primary day-to-day contact for project teams, directing technical inquiries appropriately.

• Collaborate with civil, electrical, power systems studies, and structural discipline leads to sequence tasks and meet deadlines.

• Plan engineering tasks and resource allocations in partnership with technical leads.

• Evaluate deliverables in relation to client expectations, quality benchmarks, and contractual commitments.

• Ensure that project execution aligns with client requirements, utility standards, and relevant jurisdictional regulations.

• Maintain precise project documentation and records.

• Serve as the main client liaison for assigned projects.

• Facilitate meetings with clients, internal teams, and subcontractors.

• Report on project status, risks, and technical challenges to client stakeholders.

• Provide inputs on scope, budget, and schedule for proposals.

• Delegate and manage work for engineering discipline team members.

• Mentor project engineers and junior project staff.

• Share expertise on substation delivery with the wider project management team.

• Achieve project deliverables and timelines while performing additional related responsibilities as needed.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management, or a closely related discipline, or equivalent relevant work experience.

• A minimum of five years of project management experience in engineering consulting, EPC construction, renewable energy, or a similar sector.

• Direct experience in managing high voltage projects, such as substations, interconnections, or transmission work, as a project manager or project engineer.

• Proficient in interpreting substation, transmission, and other medium/high-voltage project contracts and proposals, with the ability to explain their delivery implications.

• Proven ownership of project scope, schedule, budget, and invoicing responsibilities.

• Strong, credible communication skills with technical client stakeholders.

• Capability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and resolve intricate project challenges with minimal guidance.

• Willingness to travel up to 15% of the time, including overnight trips.

• Ability to rent and operate a vehicle for business purposes, maintaining a valid driver’s license and requisite auto insurance.

• Prior experience in substation engineering before transitioning into project management is preferred.

• Experience with a design-build or substation engineering and construction firm is preferred.

• Preferred experience with greenfield substation projects.

• PMP certification is preferred.

• Experience in coordinating multidisciplinary engineering teams and subconsultants is preferred.

• Familiarity with the utility-scale renewable energy project development lifecycle is preferred.
