This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.
• Provide guidance on the technical direction and professional growth of a small engineering team.
• Oversee project delivery while remaining actively involved when necessary.
• Partner with the Product Manager to define priorities and balance new initiatives with ongoing enhancements.
• Share engineering methodologies with leaders throughout the organization.
• Take ownership of the squad’s technical choices and ensure alignment with company and technical strategies.
• Establish team objectives and drive prioritization efforts.
• Implement practices to achieve security and operational service level targets.
• Manage organization-wide on-call coverage.
• Facilitate regular reviews of metrics concerning coverage and performance.
• Collaborate with the Product Manager and team to set OKRs.
• Identify and address risks and obstacles.
• Evaluate and communicate team performance, OKRs, KPIs, and key milestones.
• Co-lead annual and quarterly squad planning sessions.
• Recruit team members with suitable technical expertise and hire as necessary.
• Onboard, train, mentor, and develop engineers.
• Engage in performance calibration and promotion evaluations.
• Convey company, department, and pillar strategies to the squad.
• Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams, including UX and data.
• Co-lead the squad alongside the Product Manager.
• Manage squad expenditures within both operational (OpEx) and capital (CapEx) budgets.
• Cultivate a positive team culture and address interpersonal conflicts.
• Familiarity with UW’s core technology stack: gRPC, GraphQL, React, Kafka, Docker, and Kubernetes.
• Experience with Go is preferred but not mandatory.
• Proven track record of taking ownership of technical decisions and aligning them with strategic objectives.
• Strong understanding of engineering practices with the capability to identify areas for improvement.
• Experience in establishing team goals and driving prioritization.
• Ability to collaborate with Product Managers to develop OKRs that are in line with company objectives.
• Capability to co-lead planning sessions on an annual and quarterly basis.
• Experience in early risk identification and mitigation.
• Knowledge of practices concerning security and service level objectives (SLOs).
• Ability to promote operational excellence and lead metrics assessments.
• Experience managing a team of engineers effectively.
• Demonstrated ability to onboard, train, develop, and mentor team members.
• Experience in performance calibration and promotion assessments.
• Intermediate understanding of customer and market insights.
• Ability to articulate strategy to the squad clearly.
• Experience in fostering a positive team dynamic and resolving interpersonal issues.
• Ability to collaborate successfully with cross-functional colleagues.
