Engineering Manager – Head of Quality Engineering

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in South Africa.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of and enhance Storyteq’s quality engineering strategy by determining what aspects should be tested manually, what should be automated, and identifying where automation provides the greatest value.

• Set the vision for testing frameworks, tools, CI/CD integration, quality standards, release readiness, and quality metrics.

• Integrate quality earlier in the development lifecycle by assisting engineering teams in incorporating testing practices, tools, and a quality-oriented mindset into their daily activities.

• Lead the Quality Engineering team to achieve robust technical and delivery results while consistently refining workflows and methodologies.

• Acquire a comprehensive understanding of product architecture and guide the advancement of test architecture in tandem with it.

• Manage team capacity effectively between supporting application teams and investing in scalable frameworks, platforms, and automation efforts.

• Build, mentor, and retain a high-performing Quality Engineering team, facilitating recruitment, onboarding, progression, feedback, and professional development.

• Elevate Quality Engineering as a respected discipline and career pathway within Storyteq.

• Serve as the voice of quality and release risk across the organization, clearly communicating known issues, risk areas, and necessary actions.

• Contribute to the Engineering management team by sharing best practices, aligning cross-team initiatives, and influencing how engineering functions at Storyteq.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 2 years’ experience in a Lead or Engineering Manager role, overseeing a team of 5 or more engineers, including remote personnel.

• A solid technical foundation as a software engineer or quality engineer, ideally within a B2B SaaS setting.

• Extensive hands-on experience with test automation, including knowledge of frameworks, patterns, and CI/CD integration.

• A good comprehension of exploratory and manual testing, with sound judgment regarding the optimal approach for each scenario.

• Confidence in influencing teams beyond your direct management line to enhance how quality is integrated into their work.

• A hands-on leadership style, demonstrating a willingness to support the team in various capacities.

• A genuine commitment to the product, customer experience, and the individuals involved in its development.

• A positive, collaborative attitude and the ability to navigate challenges and changes effectively.

• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, capable of conveying technical subjects clearly to diverse audiences.

• Nice to have: Experience in defining and implementing a quality strategy across multiple engineering teams.

• Nice to have: Familiarity with modern cloud-native architectures such as microservices, Kubernetes, GCP, or AWS.

• Nice to have: Experience in performance, accessibility, or security testing.

• Nice to have: Exposure to testing AI-driven, media, or creative-generation products where outcomes may not always be deterministic.
