This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Take full ownership of a product area from start to finish, encompassing team management, commitments, and production software.
• Set a standard for code quality, delivery cadence, and mentoring within engineering.
• Collaborate closely with an embedded Product Manager.
• Manage services by building, testing, shipping, and operating them effectively.
• Review pull requests while also actively contributing code.
• Establish and uphold standards for code review and quality assurance.
• Influence architectural standards in collaboration with the Group Architect.
• Manage team commitments, assigned owners, deadlines, definitions of done, estimations, and re-forecasts.
• Maintain up-to-date systems of record for clear visibility of project status.
• Facilitate planning, refinement, standup, and retrospective meetings.
• Address handoffs between development, QA, DevOps, and Product teams.
• Supervise external development partner contractors alongside the internal team.
• Utilize agentic coding tools to assess quality and enhance efficiency.
• Guide engineers through one-on-ones, coaching, feedback, written expectations, recognition, and consequences.
• Resolve technical objections by proposing supported alternatives, specifying dates and responsible parties.
• Accelerate new engineers to independent contributors and support the team in navigating change.
• All four specified qualifications are mandatory.
• Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, including status updates and interaction with executives and engineers.
• Proven experience in enhancing team delivery reliability through defined owners, definitions of done, status tracking, and proactive re-forecasting.
• Experience in managing senior engineers with strong technical opinions, including those resistant to management.
• Proven track record of leading a team through organizational changes or leadership transitions while maintaining team retention.
• Prior hands-on software engineering experience before transitioning into management.
• Adequate technical expertise to assess principal-level arguments, trade-offs, constraints, architecture, and platform responsibilities.
• At least two years as a front-line engineering manager, coupled with hands-on engineering experience.
• Tangible experience in managing a team and articulating shipped work and process modifications.
• This should not be a first-time management role.
• Demonstrated delivery can be considered in lieu of specific credentials.
• Commitment to AI-assisted engineering is essential.
• Proficiency in utilizing agentic workflows.
• Preferred: Experience in a build-it, test-it, own-it, operate-it environment.
• Preferred: Experience in coordinating with external or offshore development partners.
• Preferred: Current hands-on skills with TypeScript and Java; Vue and React; AWS services such as ECS, Lambda, Aurora, DocumentDB, EventBridge, SQS, and S3; PostgreSQL, DocumentDB, Redis, and SQL Server.
• Preferred: Familiarity with clean architecture, Domain-Driven Design, event-driven systems, or SOLID principles.
• Preferred: Experience managing reorganization, leadership changes, or transitioning from legacy to modern platforms.
• Preferred: Experience in regulated industries such as legal, healthcare, or financial services.
