Engineering Manager

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of the health, output, and direction of an engineering pod consisting of approximately 6–8 engineers.

• Manage pod priorities, ownership responsibilities, expectations, planning, retrospectives, and follow-through.

• Eliminate blockers and ensure engineers remain focused on high-impact tasks.

• Be accountable for project delivery, identify risks, and intervene when work is stalled, poorly scoped, or lacks ownership.

• Conduct weekly one-on-one meetings and provide ongoing, specific feedback.

• Oversee performance management, support professional growth, write performance reviews, and address any performance gaps.

• Manage the onboarding process, prepare significant work prior to day one, and expedite new-hire ramp-up.

• Maintain precise documentation, runbooks, and ownership boundaries.

• Collaborate with Product Management on prioritization, requirements, effort estimation, and value assessment.

• Advocate for engineering trade-offs to non-engineering stakeholders and escalate persistent misalignments.

• Work closely with the Technical Lead on architecture, quality, technical risks, and ownership of technical decisions.

• Maintain technical expertise, contribute as an individual contributor when appropriate, and assist in improving incident outcomes.

• Evaluate pod staffing and seniority mix, participate in candidate interviews, and support hiring, transfers, and succession planning.

• Report on pod health and delivery risks to the Head of Engineering.

• Proactively communicate cross-pod dependencies and trade-offs.

⛳️ Requirements

• Ideally, have managed 5+ engineers directly on a product or platform team.

• Experience in shipping production software; ability to review pull requests, evaluate design documents, and assess estimates.

• Proven track record of enhancing predictable delivery under management.

• Proficient in modern AI product development, including evaluations, experiment design, dataset curation, and AI-assisted engineering workflows.

• Comfortable navigating ambiguity and high-complexity domains.

• Strong instincts for product partnership and the ability to challenge inadequate requirements.

• Excellent written communication skills.

• Direct yet considerate when providing feedback.

• Knowledgeable in operational reliability, including service level objectives (SLOs), incident response, and postmortems.

• Sharp awareness of security risks.

• Experience with hiring and onboarding in a scaling organization.

• Technical familiarity with TypeScript, React, Vite, Node/Express, Docker, GraphQL/Apollo, Postgres/Aurora, Turborepo/PNPM, AWS, Terraform, Pulumi, Buildkite, Datadog, CloudWatch, and Sentry.
