Emergency Medicine Specialist

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Switzerland.

📋 Description

• Provide timely and appropriate medical attention for patients experiencing medical, surgical, and trauma-related emergencies in resource-limited and challenging settings.

• Oversee the daily clinical operations of the Emergency Department, ensuring the delivery of high-quality emergency care.

• Deliver hands-on clinical interventions, including triage, resuscitation, trauma management, patient referrals, and follow-up care.

• Supervise, mentor, and support physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.

• Design and conduct training sessions focused on emergency medicine, trauma care, Basic Emergency Care, infection prevention and control, and mass casualty management.

• Create and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs), treatment guidelines, clinical pathways, and quality indicators.

• Lead the Emergency Department's preparedness and response efforts to mass casualty incidents, including contingency planning, staff training, and simulation exercises.

• Monitor emergency care activities, analyze medical data, and contribute to reporting and continuous quality improvement initiatives.

• Collaborate with hospital management, local health authorities, and other stakeholders to enhance emergency care systems and promote the safety of patients and healthcare workers.

• Maintain regular communication with the Chief Emergency Medicine Specialist at ICRC headquarters.

⛳️ Requirements

• Medical degree with a recognized specialization in Emergency Medicine, completed through examination.

• Current and valid specialist registration in Emergency Medicine.

• Certification in Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) or an equivalent; instructor status is preferred.

• A minimum of three years of post-specialization clinical experience in Emergency Medicine, including trauma management.

• Demonstrated ability to teach and train healthcare professionals in emergency care, trauma management, and mass casualty situations.

• Proficient in point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), with the capability to teach its application.

• Knowledge of protocols and guidelines relevant to low-resource environments.

• Compliance with annual Continuing Professional Development (CPD) or Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements, achieving at least 50 points annually.

• Experience in austere environments, conflict-affected areas, or humanitarian organizations is highly desirable.

• Additional certifications in Basic Emergency Care (BEC), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and/or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) are advantageous.

• Training in mass casualty management, such as EMERGO, MCIT, or HMIMMS, is a plus.

• Strong leadership, organizational, and team management abilities.

• Fluency in spoken and written English is essential (minimum C1 level).

• Candidates must be in good health and undergo a medical examination before deployment to the field.

• Willingness to commit to assignments lasting a minimum of three to six months.

• The ICRC does not assign personnel to a country of which they are nationals.
