This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.
• Execute and coordinate the design of electrical substations (12 kV to 500 kV), including layouts and station service systems, with minimal supervision.
• Lead the creation and evaluation of one-line and phasing diagrams, substation layouts, sections, equipment arrangements, grounding/grid layouts and details, as well as conduit and cable routing plans.
• Conduct and independently verify engineering calculations, studies, and analyses, such as grounding studies, lightning protection, switchyard illumination, and both rigid and flexible bus studies.
• Take responsibility for assigned design packages, ensuring they meet quality standards, are complete, and align with project specifications.
• Prepare and assess design criteria, technical specifications, reports, and drawing lists.
• Review vendor drawings and technical submissions to ensure compliance with project specifications and design intentions.
• Provide engineering assistance during construction phases, including addressing RFIs, issuing technical clarifications, and participating in field assessments.
• Engage in client meetings, design reviews, and constructability evaluations.
• Collaborate with civil/structural, protection & control, and telecom teams to ensure cohesive designs.
• Oversee assigned tasks while adhering to scope, schedule, and budget limitations.
• Offer guidance and mentorship to junior EITs and designers.
• Maintain project documentation and contribute to quality assurance and ongoing improvement efforts.
• Incorporate relevant safety standards, codes, and best practices into designs.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
• Registered as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or eligible for/working toward P.Eng. designation with EGBC.
• 2–5 years of pertinent experience in transmission & distribution or substation design.
• Proven experience in substation design, including layouts, grounding, and bus design; experience with BC Hydro or utility projects is advantageous.
• Familiarity with relevant industry codes and standards (Canadian Electrical Code, IEEE, IEC, CSA, OH&S).
• Proficient in engineering tools such as AutoCAD, CYMCAP, CDEGS, WINIGS, ETAP, or similar; experience in applying these tools in project contexts.
• Strong problem-solving abilities and capacity to develop practical, technically sound solutions.
• Capability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a deadline-oriented environment.
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with internal teams, clients, and vendors.
