Director, Software Engineering – Legal

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New York.

📋 Description

• Oversee the Legal Engineering delivery sector within the Legal, Privacy & Compliance Engineering organization.

• Lead engineering teams focused on developing, integrating, and maintaining technology for contract lifecycle management, legal document management, eDiscovery and legal hold, intellectual property management, eBilling, and AI-driven workflows.

• Manage a portfolio that includes enterprise SaaS platforms, custom software, interoperability layers, and unique applications.

• Take responsibility for the complete delivery of legal technical solutions across various jurisdictions.

• Recruit, retain, evaluate, develop, and mentor engineering managers, staff engineers, architects, contractors, and interns.

• Ensure the engineering delivery, technical health, reliability, and quality across the legal technology portfolio.

• Drive architecture evaluations, code quality assessments, CI/CD processes, automated testing, and operational readiness.

• Oversee complex concurrent programs and projects, including decision-making, escalations, and delivery health management.

• Establish software quality, legal architecture, engineering standards, and cybersecurity guidelines.

• Lead the interoperability strategy among SaaS platforms and custom software, covering APIs, data integration, workflow orchestration, and shared services.

• Ensure compliance with enterprise architecture, security, privacy, and data governance regulations.

• Communicate program status, risks, and engineering trade-offs to senior executives.

• Represent the organization in regulatory discussions, audits, and interactions with external partners.

• Collaborate with Product Management, Legal, Legal Operations, Cybersecurity, Principal Architects, and technical program teams.

• Manage system reliability, performance, defects, enhancements, problems, incidents, root cause analysis, SLAs, support metrics, and data integrations.

• Cultivate a high-trust, high-accountability engineering culture while fostering leadership through feedback and coaching.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent experience.

• Over 12 years of experience in software engineering.

• More than 7 years in engineering management or senior technical leadership roles.

• At least 5 years of experience in leading machine learning and automation solutions.

• Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience with AI, specifically in building or leading agentic workflows and/or agent orchestration.

• Extensive experience in legal technology within a large enterprise context.

• Proficient understanding of application security fundamentals, including SSO/IAM, API security, secure SDLC, and security review practices for SaaS integration.

• Proven track record in leading cross-functional programs with legal stakeholders.

• Ability to influence and communicate effectively at the SVP/VP level.

• Experience in managing and developing engineering teams in a matrixed Fortune 100 or similar environment.
