Director, Software Engineering

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New York.

📋 Description

• Lead the engineering organization responsible for content management systems at Reuters.

• Take charge of the platform that supports content creation, editorial workflows, and publishing on Reuters.com.

• Oversee the technical strategy, architecture, and execution of Reuters' CMS platform during a significant transition.

• Serve as a principal engineer as necessary, offering direct technical guidance on both front-end and back-end challenges.

• Maintain ownership of the technical architecture and long-term vision for the content management platform.

• Guide design decisions regarding scalability, performance, and cost-effectiveness across backend services and AWS infrastructure.

• Set and uphold uptime and reliability standards for a production platform that services external customers on a large scale.

• Assess and direct the platform's modern web rendering strategy.

• Collaborate with editorial stakeholders to translate newsroom workflows into platform requirements.

• Lead the roadmap for editorial tools and pinpoint opportunities for AI-assisted content workflows.

• Manage platform delivery teams, encompassing release management and production support.

• Oversee the technical execution of the platform transition and implement metrics for monitoring platform health and operational risks.

• Build, mentor, and lead a diverse engineering organization that includes managers and individual contributors.

• Cultivate a high-performing culture across distributed teams.

• Communicate the technical strategy and tradeoffs effectively to engineers, product partners, executives, and customers.

• Advocate for AI upskilling and adoption programs throughout the engineering organization.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

• Over 10 years of experience in software engineering.

• More than 4 years of experience managing engineers, including managing managers or leading multiple teams.

• Proven experience owning a production platform that serves external customers at scale.

• Familiarity with Agile methodologies and DevOps practices.

• Extensive knowledge of AWS, serverless architecture, and distributed systems.

• Strong understanding of modern web rendering techniques, including server-side rendering, client-side rendering, React, and build tooling.

• Working knowledge of HTTP, caching semantics, and CDN behavior in high-traffic environments.

• Experience with microservices architecture.

• Proficient in Docker and Kubernetes.

• Familiarity with test automation frameworks.

• Experience with browser and system performance testing methodologies.

• Ability to communicate technical concepts effectively to engineers, product partners, executives, and customers.

• Demonstrated capability to build and lead high-performing technical teams across various functions.
