This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.
• Develop and implement a strategic plan for editorial events aimed at broadening CalMatters’ audience, enhancing significant discussions in California, and reinforcing the organization's mission.
• Design, initiate, and execute key events that create memorable CalMatters experiences.
• Innovate and evaluate storytelling methods, audience engagement, and interactive programming formats.
• Recognize relevant issues and engage policymakers, experts, journalists, and community representatives.
• Collaborate with newsroom leaders and reporters to uphold editorial standards and journalistic integrity.
• Extend CalMatters journalism to audiences outside its current readership.
• Introduce individuals to CalMatters and its nonprofit framework in collaboration with the membership team.
• Work alongside the development team to design, promote, and implement sponsorship opportunities that align with the organization’s mission.
• Oversee budgets for the overall events division as well as individual events.
• Monitor audience growth, engagement levels, revenue, and overall impact.
• Supervise and collaborate closely with the Events Manager.
• Report to the Editor in Chief as a member of the editorial leadership team.
• Extensive experience in producing high-caliber live events, conferences, festivals, or public forums.
• Strong editorial instincts and a comprehensive understanding of journalism, contemporary issues, and civic participation.
• Proven track record of developing original ideas that captivate audiences and create enthusiasm.
• Experience collaborating with journalists, public officials, executives, and other prominent speakers.
• Exceptional project management and organizational abilities, with a capacity to oversee multiple complex productions concurrently.
• Experience in developing sponsorship opportunities or working with fundraising, business development, or marketing teams.
• Outstanding communication, relationship-building, and leadership capabilities.
• A strong commitment to CalMatters’ mission of providing reliable, nonpartisan journalism.
• A college degree is not mandatory.
• Submission of a resume, cover letter, and relevant work samples is required for application.
