Director, Institutional Giving – Foundations & Grants

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in District of Columbia.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of and expand PHA's portfolio of foundation and government grants, which currently aims for over $3M in annual revenue through activities such as prospect research, cultivation, proposal development, stewardship, and reporting.

• Create and implement a comprehensive year-round grants strategy that not only diversifies institutional funding but also increases revenue and establishes a multi-year funding pipeline.

• Write, edit, and oversee the development of grant proposals, letters of inquiry, and reports for funders.

• Cultivate relationships with foundation and institutional funders, including transformational partners contributing seven-figure amounts.

• Coordinate with executive sponsors on significant funder relationships.

• Collaborate with program leadership to ensure proposals align with program design, deliverables, outcomes, and available capacity.

• Work alongside Impact & Evaluation staff to gather data, outcomes, and case studies.

• Collaborate with Marketing & Communications to produce development materials and compelling impact narratives.

• Manage grants oversight, compliance, reporting, and expenditure tracking in conjunction with the Finance team.

• Supervise and mentor the Development Coordinator, focusing on prospect research, grants calendar management, acknowledgment workflows, and Salesforce CRM oversight.

• Maintain a transparent and actionable pipeline, along with a regular reporting schedule for leadership.

• Represent the Partnership for a Healthier America with funders, partners, the Board of Directors, and at sector meetings.

• Report directly to the SVP of Strategic Partnerships and work in close collaboration with the SVP of Programs.

⛳️ Requirements

• At least 6 years of experience in nonprofit development.

• Proven success in securing five- and six-figure grants from foundations and/or government sources.

• Strong preference for candidates with experience working with seven-figure institutional funders.

• A bachelor's or master's degree in a relevant field, or equivalent professional experience.

• Outstanding and demonstrable skills in grant writing and editing.

• Capability to convert complex program and impact data into clear, engaging, and data-driven narratives.

• Excellent presentation skills.

• Experience in building and managing a diversified institutional funding pipeline and nurturing long-term funder relationships.

• Familiarity with grants management and compliance, including funder reporting and tracking expenditures.

• Strong project management abilities, with a knack for managing multiple deadlines throughout a year-round grants calendar.

• A collaborative approach to working, with the ability to partner across various functions, including programs, finance, marketing and communications, evaluation, and leadership.

• Experience in supervising, mentoring, or developing staff members.

• Proficiency with CRM/donor databases and prospect research tools; Salesforce is preferred.
