Director, Enterprise AI & Machine Learning Engineering

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Spearhead the engineering and machine learning strategy for agentic AI solutions tailored for Instacart’s retail partners.

• Cultivate, mentor, and motivate high-performing engineering and science teams.

• Collaborate with retailers and internal stakeholders to convert complex business challenges into impactful AI products.

• Oversee the development of robust, scalable, and user-friendly systems that integrate machine learning, data, software engineering, and agentic functionalities.

• Set the strategic direction in a zero-to-one product landscape while balancing long-term vision with swift execution and adaptability.

• Act as the representative for Enterprise AI within the organization, effectively communicating trade-offs, progress, risks, and opportunities to senior stakeholders.

• Guide teams through the complete product development lifecycle, from identifying customer needs and exploring technologies to constructing, deploying, and scaling production-ready AI systems.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience in constructing and deploying agentic AI, generative AI, or machine learning products within production settings.

• Background in leading engineering, machine learning, data science, or applied science teams throughout the product development and delivery process.

• Experience collaborating with product, business, customer-facing, and technical stakeholders to define requirements and provide solutions for complex issues.

• Strong grasp of machine learning development practices, software engineering fundamentals, data systems, and operational aspects necessary for scaling AI applications.

• Demonstrated capability to establish technical direction, prioritize tasks, manage uncertainty, and achieve results in a rapidly changing environment.

• Preferred: Extensive technical knowledge in agentic systems, large language models, machine learning platforms, or related fields of applied artificial intelligence.

• Preferred: Experience in delivering applied machine learning products at a significant scale.

• Preferred: Proven track record leading cross-functional initiatives that involve engineering, machine learning, data science, product, consulting, and customer-facing teams.

• Preferred: Experience working directly with retailers, commerce platforms, or other enterprise clients.

• Preferred: History of creating clarity and driving momentum in zero-to-one product settings.

• Educational credentials are not mandatory; education is considered optional.
