Director, Data Science

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Alabama, +44 more states.

📋 Description

• Assist in defining and developing the data science strategy for a newly established pet health data business unit.

• Examine large, intricate, and multi-source datasets concerning pet health, veterinary services, customer behavior, and service utilization.

• Create predictive models, segmentation frameworks, forecasting tools, and other analytical solutions to uncover trends, patterns, and business opportunities.

• Collaborate with product, technology, commercial, operations, and executive stakeholders to identify data products and insights that can be monetized.

• Aid in the creation of data products that may be marketed to external customers, partners, or industry stakeholders.

• Engage with both internal and external data sources, including veterinary partners, pet care centers, customer systems, and third-party datasets.

• Lead cross-functional initiatives in data cleaning, normalization, deduplication, taxonomy development, and quality assurance.

• Convert complex analytical findings into clear, actionable insights for non-technical audiences.

• Contribute to the establishment of best practices for responsible data usage, privacy, governance, de-identification, and data quality.

• Function effectively in an entrepreneurial environment where business models are still under development.

• Propel the creation of innovative, statistically distinct predictive models.

• Help shape the future structure, tools, and capabilities of the data science function as the business expands.

• Reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer.

• Travel is less than 10%.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Economics, Bioinformatics, or a related quantitative field.

• 6-10+ years of experience in data science, advanced analytics, machine learning, statistical modeling, or a related quantitative role.

• Strong expertise in Python and/or R.

• Proficient in SQL and experienced in working with relational databases and large datasets.

• Proven experience in managing messy, fragmented, or multi-source data and transforming it into usable analytical assets.

• Demonstrated ability to build predictive models, segmentation frameworks, forecasting models, machine learning models, or other advanced analytical solutions.

• Strong grasp of data quality, feature engineering, statistical inference, experimentation, model validation, and analytical best practices.

• Capability to clearly communicate complex analyses to executive, commercial, product, and non-technical stakeholders.

• Comfortable working in a newly established business, startup-like environment, or high-growth setting characterized by ambiguity and shifting priorities.

• Experience in newly formed companies, startups, venture-backed firms, PE-backed companies, or corporate incubation environments.

• Background in developing data products, commercial analytics products, data platforms, data marketplaces, or monetizable insight products.

• Experience in healthcare, veterinary medicine, pet care, life sciences, insurance, consumer health, retail, marketplace businesses, or multi-site services.

• Familiarity with working in regulated, sensitive, privacy-conscious, or consumer data environments.

• Knowledge of privacy-preserving analytics, de-identification, aggregation, consent frameworks, and responsible data-use practices.

• Experience with cloud data platforms such as Snowflake, Databricks, AWS, GCP, Azure, or similar.

• Proficient in BI and visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, Looker, Sigma, or similar.

• Experience collaborating with product, engineering, commercial, legal, operations, and executive teams.

• Capable of working independently in a fully remote setting while effectively collaborating across functions.
