Director, AI Engineer – Remote Eligible

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +3 more states.

📋 Description

• Collaborate with engineers, research scientists, technical program managers, and product managers to deliver products powered by AI.

• Manage the design, development, testing, deployment, and support of AI software components, which include foundation model training, LLM inference, similarity search, guardrails, model evaluation, experimentation, governance, and observability.

• Make decisions regarding build-versus-buy options for open-source and SaaS AI technologies.

• Innovate and introduce optimization techniques for foundation models to enhance scalability, cost, latency, and throughput of production AI systems.

• Contribute to the technical vision and long-term roadmap for foundational AI systems.

• Attract and retain talent in AI and foster the personal and professional growth of team members.

• Convert enterprise AI strategy into actionable portfolio-level execution plans across various product areas.

• Scale AI engineering practices through shared infrastructure, reusable components, and a unified framework for observability and governance.

• Establish enterprise standards for Responsible AI, including fairness metrics, model evaluation protocols, documentation requirements, and readiness for audits.

• Collaborate with research, compliance, and enterprise risk teams to ensure that deployed systems adhere to ethical and regulatory standards.

⛳️ Requirements

• A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, AI, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related fields, along with a minimum of 8 years of experience in developing AI and ML algorithms or technologies; or a Master’s degree in one of these fields with at least 6 years of relevant experience.

• A minimum of 3 years of experience in people leadership.

• Over 5 years of experience in managing and leading an engineering team.

• At least 7 years of experience in deploying scalable and responsible AI solutions on cloud platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, or equivalent private cloud.

• Proficiency in developing AI and ML algorithms or technologies using Python, C++, C#, Java, CUDA, or Golang.

• Experience in creating agentic AI systems and workflows.

• Proven experience in building and leading multi-team AI organizations that deliver multiple enterprise products or capabilities simultaneously.

• Experience in executing long-term AI platform strategies that align with enterprise priorities and regulatory frameworks.

• Familiarity with establishing cross-functional operating rhythms and review processes, including OKRs, AI governance councils, and quarterly reviews.

• Ability to appropriately size models, instance counts, and hardware types based on specific requirements.

• Capability to comprehend scientific publications and apply innovative techniques in production environments.

• Strong foundation in engineering, mathematics, hardware, software, and AI.

• Exceptional communication and presentation skills.
