Principal Engineer, AI

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Design and develop new internal AI systems from inception to deployment as the founding engineer.

• Take responsibility for retrieval quality, permissions, security, and reliability to ensure trustworthy AI at a company-wide scale.

• Engage hands-on with LLMs, retrieval systems, agents, and various integrations.

• Collaborate with teams throughout the company to incorporate AI into practical workflows.

• Work closely with functional leaders and their teams on a daily basis, while also engaging with executive leadership on a weekly basis.

• Establish sustainable systems and ownership that endure beyond each team's involvement.

• Lead evaluations of build-versus-buy options and execute rapid proofs of concept.

• Make informed technology decisions quickly, committing to initiatives and discontinuing unsuccessful proofs of concept.

• Collaborate directly with executive leadership to guide company decision-making.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience in building production systems at a Staff+ level, including data infrastructure, retrieval, or applied AI utilized by hundreds to thousands of users.

• Hands-on expertise with the contemporary AI technology stack.

• Background in production AI or data systems.

• Familiarity with LLMs, retrieval systems, agents, and integrations.

• Strong pragmatic technology instincts with the capability to justify technology choices.

• Experience as a founding engineer, consultant, or in a forward-deployed role.

• Ability to take ownership of outcomes within another department's domain.

• Regular engagement with AI tools and agents.

• Capacity to deliver products every few weeks while maintaining reliable systems.

• Effective communication skills to articulate technical decisions to a CEO.

• Successful passing of a background check, including identity verification.

• Legally authorized to work in Canada.
