DevOps Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in India.

📋 Description

• Evaluate and enhance the infrastructure landscape across Linode and DigitalOcean, supported by Cloudflare.

• Take charge of resilience planning to achieve 99.9% uptime, with a recovery time objective of 4 hours and a recovery point objective of 1 hour.

• Establish a 3-2-1 backup strategy that includes hourly encrypted MongoDB backups, replication in a second region, off-provider replication, and a local encrypted archive.

• Validate backups through monthly restoration drills.

• Create and sustain CI/CD processes for the MEAN-stack application.

• Execute zero-downtime releases using rolling restarts behind a load balancer and blue-green deployment strategies.

• Collaborate with the QA team to integrate their automated test suite as a release gate.

• Oversee monitoring, alerting, and incident response for uptime, error rates, and performance metrics.

• Ensure alerts are directed to the appropriate personnel before users are aware of any issues.

• Draft and practice the disaster-recovery runbook.

• Manage the security posture, including secrets management, access control, Cloudflare WAF and rules, security audit remediation, and compliance with UK GDPR.

• Oversee cloud expenditure across providers and provide monthly spending reports.

• Assess provider consolidation or AWS-based recovery options based on data-driven insights.

• Document infrastructure processes in runbooks that the engineering team can utilize without live assistance.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 4 years of experience managing production infrastructure for a live web application.

• Accountability for at least one production platform.

• Practical experience with Linux servers on Linode/DigitalOcean or comparable VPS providers.

• Familiarity with Cloudflare DNS, caching, and WAF functionalities.

• Proficient in using Docker.

• Experience with CI/CD tools such as GitHub Actions or GitLab CI.

• Strong preference for experience with infrastructure-as-code using Terraform or Ansible.

• Hands-on experience with production MongoDB operations, including replica sets, backups, restores, and migrations under load.

• Capability in deploying and managing Node.js applications.

• Familiarity with the MEAN stack: MongoDB, Express, Angular, Node.

• Evidence of security hardening practices, secrets management, and conducting access reviews.

• Experience in preparing for or addressing security audits is a significant advantage.

• Comfortable working independently as the sole infrastructure professional.

• Experience in edtech, CRM-style platforms, or systems handling sensitive personal data is a plus.

• Familiarity with UK GDPR / Cyber Essentials is an added benefit.

• Previous experience in transitioning a platform from a departing team is advantageous.
