Development Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +2 more states.

📋 Description

• Design and develop utility-scale solar photovoltaic and battery energy storage projects in the initial stages of development within the Western region.

• Conduct production and dispatch modeling, facility layout, project sizing, and preliminary system analysis for early-phase cost estimations.

• Collaborate with internal drafting and civil/geotechnical engineering teams to finalize layouts and designs.

• Prepare submissions for offtake RFPs, permit applications, and interconnection requests.

• Execute technical due diligence to enhance facility design.

• Assist senior development engineers with technical and engineering issues, and potentially oversee project engineering.

• Create preliminary plant designs, site layouts, and single-line diagrams for greenfield projects, mergers and acquisitions, and RFP support.

• Choose primary project equipment based on site conditions, utility specifications, and project timelines.

• Model energy production utilizing PVsyst and/or Solar Farmer, and simulate battery dispatch.

• Perform remote and on-site evaluations of project locations.

• Review third-party production forecasts, site designs, product documentation, and meteorological information.

• Assist estimating, development, and commercial teams with project pricing and value engineering efforts.

• Enhance processes and design tools for cost estimation and preliminary facility design.

• Recognize evolving project development trends and provide insights.

• Participate in site safety inspections and identify job site hazards.

• Lead by example.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering (electrical or mechanical preferred) or a comparable technical discipline.

• Over 3 years of professional experience in energy system design or consulting.

• Advanced degrees in relevant fields may be counted towards experience requirements.

• Proficiency in PVsyst, Solar Farmer, SAM (System Advisor Model), and AutoCAD.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal capabilities.

• Ability to collaborate across various functions within a large organization.

• Capability to work efficiently in a remote and/or distributed team setting.

• Ability to manage third-party consultants, vendors, and internal stakeholders.

• Skilled in the MS Office Suite.

• Required to obtain and maintain NFPA 70E, OSHA 10, and CPR/First Aid safety certifications.

• EIT or PE qualifications, NABCEP PV Installation Professional certification, experience in substation/high voltage design, structural/civil/SCADA/commissioning engineering design, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and familiarity with wind, green hydrogen, hydroelectric, nuclear, or data centers are advantageous.
