Development Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +2 more states.

📋 Description

• Design and develop utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage (BESS) projects during the early stages of development in the West region.

• Conduct production and dispatch modeling, facility layout, project sizing, and initial system analysis for preliminary cost estimates.

• Collaborate with internal drafting and civil/geotechnical engineering teams to finalize layouts and designs.

• Assist in responding to offtake RFPs, permit submissions, and interconnection applications.

• Execute technical due diligence to enhance facility design.

• Provide support to senior development engineers on technical and engineering issues concerning assigned projects.

• May act as the lead project engineer.

• Create initial plant designs, site layouts, and single-line diagrams.

• Choose primary project equipment, including inverters, PV modules, batteries, and trackers.

• Model energy production using PVsyst and/or Solar Farmer, as well as model battery dispatch.

• Conduct remote and on-site evaluations of project locations.

• Perform technical assessments on production estimates, site plans, product documentation, and meteorological data.

• Assist estimating, development, and commercial teams with project pricing and value engineering efforts.

• Enhance project development processes and design tools.

• Identify evolving trends in project development and provide constructive feedback.

• Participate in site safety walks and recognize jobsite hazards.

• Demonstrate leadership by setting a positive example.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in engineering (electrical or mechanical preferred) or a related technical field.

• Over 3 years of professional experience in energy system design or consulting.

• Advanced degrees in a relevant field may be counted towards experience requirements.

• Proficiency in PVsyst, Solar Farmer, SAM (System Advisor Model), and AutoCAD.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.

• Capability to work collaboratively across a large organization.

• Ability to function effectively in a remote and/or distributed team setting.

• Experience managing third-party consultants, vendors, and internal stakeholders.

• Proficient with MS Office Suite.

• Required to obtain and maintain NFPA 70E, OSHA 10, and CPR/First Aid safety certifications.

• Graduate degree in engineering is a plus.

• EIT or PE qualifications are advantageous.

• NABCEP PV Installation Professional certification is a plus.

• Experience in substation/high voltage design is a plus.

• Background in structural/civil/SCADA/commissioning engineering design is a plus.

• Familiarity with AutoCAD Civil 3D is a plus.

• Experience with wind, green hydrogen, hydroelectric, nuclear, or data center technologies is a plus.
