This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.
• Assess and analyze intricate loan scenarios to determine eligibility, structure, and possible approval pathways.
• Review requests for underwriting exceptions and guideline variances, evaluating associated risks and business implications.
• Act as a subject matter expert on company, agency, investor, and regulatory standards.
• Collaborate with Sales, Account Management, Underwriting, and Operations teams on challenging loan transactions.
• Investigate and interpret underwriting guidelines to support decision-making and ensure consistency.
• Identify compensating factors and alternative structuring options.
• Elevate high-risk or precedent-setting cases to senior credit leadership with pertinent recommendations.
• Convey guideline interpretations and risk evaluations to internal stakeholders.
• Track exception trends and suggest enhancements for processes, policies, and training.
• Engage in quality control initiatives.
• Stay updated on changes in agency, investor, regulatory, and market guidelines.
• Support special projects, product implementations, and guideline rollouts.
• High school diploma or equivalent is mandatory.
• Minimum of 5 years of mortgage underwriting experience with a strong understanding of agency, government, non-QM, and investor guidelines.
• At least 2 years of experience analyzing complex loan scenarios, exception requests, or escalated credit-risk decisions.
• Proficient in interpreting and applying complex guidelines while demonstrating sound judgment in uncertain situations.
• Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
• Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
• Excellent organizational abilities and capability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
• Reliable internet connection and a quiet, professional workspace are essential.
• Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, or a related field is preferred.
• DE, SAR, LAPP/SAR, or other advanced mortgage underwriting certifications are preferred.
• Experience with Deal Desk, Credit Policy, Credit Risk, Underwriting Support, or guideline exception review is preferred.
• Familiarity with Correspondent and Wholesale mortgage channels is preferred.
• Previous leadership, mentoring, or team management experience is preferred.
• Experience collaborating with Sales, Underwriting, and Operations teams is preferred.
• Knowledge of investor relations, product development, and mortgage credit policy implementation is preferred.
• Experience analyzing exception trends and recommending enhancements in processes, policies, or training initiatives is preferred.
• Strong presentation and stakeholder management skills are preferred.
• Fully remote work option from the employee’s home or another approved off-site location.
