This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Pennsylvania.
• Oversee the complete administration of SQL Server and PostgreSQL databases, focusing on performance tuning, query optimization, indexing strategies, and execution plan analysis.
• Develop, implement, and routinely test backup, replication, and disaster recovery strategies.
• Handle database security, including roles, permissions, access controls, and auditing processes.
• Monitor and strategize database capacity, considering storage growth, connection pooling, and resource distribution.
• Oversee database version upgrades, patch management, and configuration adjustments.
• Conduct regular database maintenance, including index/statistics management, vacuuming, storage optimization, and space reclamation.
• Actively monitor the health and performance of databases, addressing issues proactively to prevent impact on production.
• Manage cloud cost optimization and capacity planning, encompassing license tracking, resource forecasting, and optimization of Azure compute expenditures.
• Collaborate with the Data Architect and engineering teams to set database standards and enhance operational practices.
• Plan and carry out database migrations to cloud environments.
• Cultivate working relationships with engineering teams to communicate database limitations and recommendations.
• Share database knowledge and best practices with junior administrators and engineering colleagues.
• Perform additional tasks as needed.
• BA/BS in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a similar field, with over 5 years of experience in data operations or database administration; or a Master's degree with at least 3 years of relevant experience.
• Proven experience as a database administrator for SQL Server and/or PostgreSQL, including expertise in performance tuning, backup and recovery, high availability, security and access management, and capacity planning.
• Advanced proficiency in SQL/T-SQL.
• Familiarity with at least one scripting language (Python or PowerShell) for automating database tasks.
• Capability to design and implement monitoring systems for database health, performance, and capacity.
• Experience or strong knowledge in migrating databases to cloud-based platforms such as Microsoft Azure.
• Understanding of the financial implications related to operational tasks.
• Demonstrated experience in mentoring or coaching less experienced engineers.
• Strong systems thinking capabilities.
• Good judgment in balancing trade-offs among database performance, availability, security, and costs.
• Excellent written communication skills.
• Ability to independently lead complex incident responses and drive improvements in systemic reliability.
