This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.
• Take responsibility for the health, performance, and security of Liberty’s SQL Server/Azure SQL data warehouse infrastructure.
• Manage, monitor, and optimize database environments, encompassing indexing, query performance, backup and recovery, capacity planning, and patching.
• Develop, oversee, and monitor ETL/ELT pipelines from agency management, carriers, finance, HR/payroll, and various business systems.
• Design and uphold data normalization, transformation, and modeling logic.
• Handle schema modifications, data quality assurances, job orchestration, recurring data loads, pipeline failures, and data inconsistencies.
• Set and uphold data access controls, retention policies, and documentation standards.
• Collaborate with IT to adhere to security, change management, access provisioning, and architectural standards.
• Work closely with BI/Analytics to provide clean, well-structured datasets for dashboards, applications, and APIs.
• Manage designated aspects of Liberty’s Microsoft Azure subscription, including organization, RBAC, cost management, tagging, naming, and platform security.
• Oversee Azure infrastructure that supports Liberty OS and Liberty Aura, including provisioning, configuration, monitoring, patching, and capacity planning.
• Lead the phase-out of legacy systems and databases, managing migration, archival, retention validation, resource retirement, and documentation.
• Design, construct, and maintain internal applications and automations utilizing AI-assisted development tools.
• Convert business needs into internal tools, integrations, and automations.
• Implement code reviews, version control, testing, and documentation practices.
• Assess AI coding tools and workflows and disseminate practices that enhance development speed and quality.
• Build and sustain integrations between the data warehouse and internal business applications.
• Adhere to data handling, security, and compliance requirements for production, sensitive, and regulated data.
• Maintain a dotted-line reporting relationship to Technology Operations.
• Over 6 years of experience managing SQL Server or a similar relational database platform within a production environment.
• Practical experience in developing and maintaining ETL/ELT pipelines and data warehouse or data mart architectures.
• Experience administering a Microsoft Azure subscription, including organization of resources and subscriptions, Entra ID role-based access control, cost management, and platform security configuration.
• Strong SQL proficiency, including query optimization, indexing strategies, and performance troubleshooting.
• Hands-on experience using AI coding assistants or agents such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or Cursor in a real development environment.
• Competency in Python, C#, or JavaScript/TypeScript.
• Familiarity with Git and standard software development lifecycle practices.
• Excellent troubleshooting abilities and capacity to manage systems comprehensively.
• Experience in migrating and retiring legacy systems or databases, including data migration, archival, and retention-compliant shutdowns.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Preferred: experience with Azure SQL Managed Instance or another cloud data platform.
• Preferred: experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Bicep, ARM, or Terraform and Azure cost management/FinOps.
• Preferred: experience with Tableau or other BI/reporting tools.
• Preferred: experience in insurance, brokerage, or financial services, or with Applied Epic or AMS360.
• Preferred: experience building or integrating MCP servers or similar agentic/AI tool-calling architectures.
• Preferred: familiarity with data governance or regulatory compliance standards.
• Preferred: experience mentoring developers on AI-assisted development practices.
