Data Platform & Cloud Engineer, AI-Enabled Developer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Take responsibility for the health, performance, and security of Liberty’s SQL Server/Azure SQL data warehouse infrastructure.

• Administer, monitor, and optimize database environments, including tasks such as indexing, query performance, backup and recovery, capacity planning, and patching.

• Construct, maintain, and oversee ETL/ELT pipelines from agency management, carrier, finance, HR/payroll, and various other business systems.

• Design and uphold data normalization, transformation, and modeling logic.

• Manage schema modifications, data quality assessments, job orchestration, and regular data loads.

• Diagnose pipeline failures and data inconsistencies.

• Establish and enforce data access controls, retention policies, and documentation standards.

• Collaborate with IT to adhere to security, change management, access provisioning, and architectural standards.

• Partner with BI/Analytics teams to provide clean, modeled datasets for dashboards, applications, and APIs.

• Administer segments of Liberty’s Microsoft Azure subscription, covering organization, Entra ID access control, cost management, tagging, naming conventions, and security setup.

• Manage Azure infrastructure supporting Liberty OS and Liberty Aura, focusing on provisioning, monitoring, patching, and capacity planning.

• Lead the decommissioning of outdated systems and databases, including migration, archival, validation of retention, and retirement of orphaned Azure resources.

• Design, develop, and maintain internal applications and automations utilizing AI-assisted development tools.

• Translate business requirements into internal tools, integrations, and automations.

• Implement code review, version control, testing, and documentation practices.

• Assess AI coding tools and workflows, sharing best practices with the team.

• Build and maintain connections between the data warehouse and internal business applications.

• Adhere to data handling, security, and compliance protocols for production, sensitive, and regulated data.

• Report through a dotted-line structure to Technology Operations.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 6 years of experience managing SQL Server or a similar relational database platform in a production setting.

• Practical experience in building and maintaining ETL/ELT pipelines and data warehouse or data mart architectures.

• Hands-on experience managing a Microsoft Azure subscription, including organization of resources and subscriptions, Entra ID role-based access control, cost management, and security configuration.

• Strong SQL skills encompassing query optimization, indexing strategies, and performance troubleshooting.

• Practical experience using modern AI coding assistants or agents within real development workflows.

• Proficiency in Python, C#, or JavaScript/TypeScript.

• Familiarity with Git and standard software development lifecycle methodologies.

• Excellent troubleshooting abilities and the capacity to take ownership of systems end-to-end.

• Experience in migrating and decommissioning legacy systems or databases, focusing on data migration, archival, and retention-compliant shutdowns.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

• Preferred: experience with Azure SQL Managed Instance or another cloud data platform.

• Preferred: experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Bicep, ARM, or Terraform.

• Preferred: experience with Tableau or another modern BI/reporting tool.

• Preferred: background in insurance, brokerage, or financial services, or familiarity with Applied Epic or AMS360.

• Preferred: experience with MCP servers or similar agentic/AI tool-calling architectures.

• Preferred: exposure to data governance or regulatory compliance requirements.

• Preferred: experience mentoring developers in AI-assisted development practices.

• Must comply with applicable state insurance licensing requirements where a state insurance license is necessary.
