Data Engineer II – Library Systems

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Maryland.

📋 Description

• Oversee data extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) processes for Library operations, excluding cataloging and collection management.

• Ensure that data capture workflows, translation methods, deposit techniques, and quality assurance measures adhere to Library standards.

• Design, develop, and sustain software infrastructure for automated data extraction, transformation, and loading.

• Manage input and output data from databases and execute complex queries.

• Write scripts for data manipulation, cleaning, filtering, and preparation of data outputs.

• Establish systems to monitor and ensure data quality, identify anomalies, and carry out daily quality assurance tasks.

• Maintain, troubleshoot, and audit data infrastructure and sources.

• Work in collaboration with Business Analysts to oversee ETL and reporting project roadmaps.

• Lead the software development lifecycle for ETL and data exchange.

• Create tools and processes to capture, normalize, and deliver research and library collections data via central and AI-ready data platforms.

• Assist library catalog and institutional repository systems through bibliographic metadata quality assurance, enhancement, corrections, and metadata crosswalks.

• Document data pipelines for both technical and non-technical stakeholders using technical writing and systems diagrams.

• Design, produce, and maintain data pipelines for acquisition, management, transformation, and back-end development.

• Write and maintain ETL/ELT processes for both structured and unstructured data sources.

• Develop and maintain web data scraping systems.

• Contribute to the design of data architecture and provide ongoing support.

• Deploy data pipelines into production using data warehousing systems.

• Source, analyze, and visualize data to generate insights for research projects and organizational requests.

• Collaborate with developers, analysts, data scientists, researchers, policy experts, partners, contractors, and vendors.

• Communicate effectively with division leadership and team members.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree.

• Five years of relevant work experience in database management, design, and business requirement gathering.

• Additional education may substitute for the required experience.

• Relevant experience may also substitute for the required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, in accordance with the JHU equivalency formula.

• Proficiency in bibliographic metadata standards, including MARC and Dublin Core.

• Familiarity with Business Intelligence systems and tools such as Power BI and Tableau.

• Experience with AWS and Microsoft Azure data utilities.

• Background in designing and implementing ETL processes using stored procedures in an enterprise SQL Server environment.

• Experience in data normalization using both traditional and dimensional data modeling.

• Proficient in developing software and scripts using SQL, Python, or other relevant programming languages.

• Ability and eagerness to learn and apply emerging technologies, including AI-enabled tools.

• Intermediate proficiency in data management and analysis, data pipeline architecture and ETL/ELT development, database querying, data validation and quality assurance, data visualization, data warehousing and architecture, programming languages, and web scraping and data acquisition.

• Intermediate oral and written communication abilities.
