This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Michigan.
• Cultivate and enhance partnerships with independent agency collaborators across Western Michigan.
• Act as a reliable underwriting resource and advocate for sustainable growth.
• Discover opportunities to expand Hastings’ Commercial Lines portfolio.
• Collaborate with agencies to secure profitable new business while adhering to underwriting standards.
• Conduct regular visits to agencies and represent Hastings in the market.
• Assess, evaluate, and underwrite new and renewal commercial business according to established underwriting guidelines and authority limits.
• Analyze commercial risks, exposures, pricing, and coverage requirements.
• Maintain comprehensive knowledge of commercial products, coverages, pricing strategies, underwriting appetite, and relevant guidelines.
• Work alongside Territory Sales Managers and internal business partners on agency development and territory growth strategies.
• Partner with agency collaborators, policyholders, and internal teams to provide responsive underwriting support.
• Collaborate with Sales, Loss Control, Product Development, Claims, and Underwriting experts.
• Offer guidance on coverage interpretation, pricing considerations, and best practices in underwriting.
• Serve as a technical expert and contribute to training, professional development, and departmental initiatives.
• Five to eight years of proven experience in property and casualty Commercial Lines underwriting.
• Experience in promoting new business growth and developing relationships with agencies.
• Strong preference for experience in Middle Market commercial underwriting.
• Proven track record in evaluating commercial risks and making informed underwriting decisions across diverse industries and exposures.
• Demonstrated capability to build, sustain, and expand relationships with independent agency partners.
• Proven ability to identify new business opportunities and contribute to profitable commercial expansion.
• Experience in balancing business development goals with disciplined risk selection and profitability objectives.
• Strong knowledge of commercial insurance products, coverages, pricing, and underwriting principles.
• Excellent organizational abilities, self-motivation, and capacity to work independently with minimal oversight.
• Exceptional communication, relationship-building, and time-management skills.
• Bachelor’s degree in Insurance, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Associate in Underwriting (AU), Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), or other relevant insurance certifications preferred.
• Valid driver's license.
• Ability to comply with Hastings Insurance fleet safety standards.
• Regular daily travel throughout the designated territory.
• Occasional overnight travel may be necessary.
