CMS Implementation Engineer, Drupal, Wagtail

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New Mexico.

📋 Description

• Oversee the comprehensive technical execution of the new GeoInfo website.

• Set up core CMS structures, modules/packages, and publishing workflows.

• Develop approved reusable templates and page models utilizing Drupal and/or Wagtail.

• Assist in building the website's information architecture from Level 0 through Level 2 and beyond, ensuring proper structural build-out and taxonomy alignment.

• Collaborate with technical, infrastructure, and security stakeholders to adhere to compliance, accessibility, hosting, and security standards.

• Implement prioritized content migration workflows in line with the Content Migration Plan.

• Extract, clean, and integrate legacy static assets, including technical PDF reports, scientific images, and downloadable datasets into CMS media libraries.

• Set up URL routing, 301 redirects, menu navigation, breadcrumbs, and cross-site transition pathways.

• Lead the technical testing phase for template rendering, responsive UI, editorial workflows, permissions, search indexing, and essential launch functionalities.

• Integrate third-party institutional systems, APIs, and enterprise databases such as HigherEd ERP/Ellucian Banner.

• Monitor, estimate, and document deliverables, backlog stories, bugs, and technical debt utilizing Jira.

• Provide a thoroughly tested, secure, production-ready website filled with validated migrated Level 0 through Level 2 content by established deadlines.

• Work in collaboration with project, product management, design, content strategy, data services, and security teams.

• Support the website through various phases including development, migration, system integration, testing, and production deployment leading up to the Q2 2027 launch milestone.

⛳️ Requirements

• 3–5+ years of practical CMS development and technical implementation experience.

• Proven track record in delivering multiple production website builds, custom module/model configurations, and extensive data migrations.

• Direct expertise in Drupal (PHP, Composer, Twig) and/or Wagtail (Python, Django).

• Profound understanding of modular structured content, reusable templates, atomic page components, custom field configurations, and multi-tier editorial publishing workflows.

• Experience in executing content migration pipelines, database transformation scripts, and digital asset migrations for large static repositories.

• Familiarity with web QA, functional and cross-browser testing, WCAG accessibility compliance, redirect rule engines, and go-live deployment protocols.

• Capability to collaborate with software engineering, UI/UX design, content strategy, project management, and executive client stakeholder teams.

• Experience in managing implementation sprints, tickets, pull requests, and bug backlogs using Jira or similar agile project management tools.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Ability to produce technical documentation, architectural decision records (ADRs), and handoff guides.

• Preferred: Residents of New Mexico and West Texas who are willing to travel on-site to Socorro, New Mexico, up to two times during the project lifecycle.

• Preferred: Direct experience in engineering web solutions for higher education, scientific research organizations, geological surveys, or public-sector agencies.
