Claims Counsel – Surety

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Independently manage claims related to complex contracts and commercial surety bonds across various jurisdictions.

• Select, engage, and oversee external surety claims counsel and associated resources.

• Establish reserves while managing claims-handling costs and expenditures.

• Participate in mediations, arbitrations, and trials as required.

• Prepare claim reports for underwriting and management purposes.

• Assist in the creation or modification of surety claim and underwriting materials and documents.

• Support underwriters in surety transactions by drafting indemnity, collateral, and related agreements, as well as reviewing or manuscripting bond forms.

• Develop legal resources and training materials for Skyward Surety.

• Provide education and training to surety underwriting teams and designated company personnel.

• Conduct research, analysis, and deliver updates on legal changes in the surety sector.

• Foster a culture of personal responsibility, accountability, and transparent communication.

• Ensure the implementation of fair and ethical policies and practices.

• Carry out other assigned responsibilities.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 2+ years of experience in handling surety bond claims.

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA accredited law school is mandatory.

• A State Claims Adjuster license is highly preferred.

• Previous "in-house" experience within the surety claims department of an insurance company is advantageous.

• Membership in ABA/TIPS/FSLC, either past or present, is a plus.

• Extensive experience in surety claims.

• Strong legal judgment paired with business acumen.

• Capability to function effectively in a fast-paced remote work environment.
