This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in District of Columbia, +2 more states.
• Lead UCS's human resources function, workplace culture, and strategies for justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) to support the organization's mission and strategic direction.
• Report directly to the President & CEO and contribute as a member of the Executive Team.
• Provide counsel to the President and collaborate with the Executive Team, Leadership Team, and Board.
• Advocate for a cohesive, welcoming, anti-racist, and inclusive workplace culture.
• Offer leadership and oversight for the People, Culture & Equity department.
• Manage the entire employee lifecycle.
• Ensure adherence to the collective bargaining agreement and relevant employment laws.
• Propel the enterprise-wide JEDI strategy and guide organizational change.
• Direct workforce practices, organizational culture, leadership development, organizational systems, learning, accountability, and employee experience in relation to the enterprise JEDI strategy.
• Act as a strategic advisor, partner, and resource for mission-aligned and programmatic JEDI objectives.
• Exercise authority in collaboration with Executive Team members and within the responsibilities designated by the President & CEO.
• Allocate approximately 50% of efforts towards People and Culture leadership and 50% towards enterprise JEDI leadership, integrating equity into all people practices.
• MBA or MA/MS in human resources, organizational development, organizational psychology, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience or training.
• A minimum of 10 years of experience in HR and/or people leadership.
• At least five years of executive-level experience within an organization of no less than 100 full-time employees.
• Proven experience in leading enterprise JEDI strategy, anti-racism initiatives, and culture transformation with measurable outcomes.
• Capability to influence senior leadership, foster shared accountability, and embed equity into organizational systems and HR practices.
• Experience operating within a unionized setting.
• Proficient in constructing equity-centered accountability frameworks, establishing measurable objectives, facilitating challenging discussions, advising senior leaders, and translating JEDI commitments into actionable changes.
• Exceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Strong active listening and relationship-building skills.
• Excellent conflict resolution, consensus-building, and change management abilities.
• Comprehensive knowledge of employment-related laws and regulations, especially in unionized environments.
• Experience collaborating with external legal counsel.
• Outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
• SHRM-SCP or SHRM-CP certification is preferred.
• Familiarity with human resource information systems is preferred.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software is preferred.
• Must reside in the Eastern Time Zone, ideally near Cambridge, MA, or Washington, DC.
