Certified Inpatient Medical Coding Specialist

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Kansas, +6 more states.

📋 Description

• Review and abstract inpatient medical records.

• Identify and accurately assign diagnosis, procedure, DRG, and ICD-10 codes for inpatient records.

• Gather and incorporate data elements necessary for federal or state reporting and billing.

• Examine records for diagnosis and procedure specificity, ensuring appropriate reimbursement.

• Consult with physicians when documentation is insufficient, ambiguous, unclear, or when coding assignments are challenging.

• Stay updated with coding and reimbursement reporting guidelines, raising any concerns to management.

• Maintain an accuracy rate of 92% to 95% in ICD-10 and DRG assignments while adhering to productivity standards and minimizing abstracting errors.

• Comply with AHIMA Standards of Ethical Coding and official coding guidelines.

• Follow Memorial Hermann’s policies, procedures, safety standards, productivity, quality, and budgetary requirements.

• Fulfill mandatory and continuing education and skills competency requirements.

• Assist in achieving departmental goals and act as a preceptor, mentor, and resource for less experienced staff.

• Deliver safe, caring, personalized, and efficient experiences to both patients and colleagues.

• Perform additional duties as assigned.

⛳️ Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED is required.

• RHIT, RHIA, CCA, CCS, or CIC coding certification from AHIMA or AAPC is required.

• A minimum of three (3) years of inpatient hospital coding experience is required.

• Experience in coding at a level 1 trauma facility or academic teaching facility is strongly preferred.

• Strong oral and written communication skills are essential.

• In-depth knowledge of ICD-10-CM and PCS coding.

• Analytical skills to interpret health record data and assign appropriate codes.

• Proficient understanding of human anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and surgical terminology.

• Critical thinking, good judgment, and decision-making abilities are necessary.

• Familiarity with coding compliance policies, official coding guidelines, regulatory requirements, and internal policies and procedures.

• Proficient in navigating a Windows-based application environment.

• Must reside in Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, or North Carolina, or be willing to relocate to an eligible state.
