Burn Crew Member

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Alabama.

📋 Description

• Engage in wildland fire operations, which include ignition, control, mop-up, suppression, and monitoring.

• Collaborate within a 3-person team associated with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Cahaba River and Mountain Longleaf National Wildlife Refuges.

• Execute tasks as assigned by a Burn Crew Manager or other leadership roles.

• Prepare fire lines and oversee activities post-burn.

• Stay informed about new burning techniques and equipment.

• Maintain and enhance professional fire certification credentials.

• Foster and develop relationships within both the professional fire sector and local communities.

• Engage in wildland fire suppression efforts alongside non-profits, local fire departments, and local, state, and federal agencies, including tribal or indigenous partners.

• Operate in varying weather conditions, remote locations, challenging and hazardous terrains, and physically demanding situations.

⛳️ Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent qualification.

• Must be eligible to obtain qualifications for Prescribed Fire Crew Member (RXCM) or Fire Fighter Type 2 (FFT2).

• Required training includes Introduction to ICS (I-100), Human Factors on the Fire line (L-180), Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior (S-190), Firefighting Training (S-130), and one supervised training burn with a qualified FFT2.

• Must meet physical fitness standards as determined by the local Prescribed Fire Manager and the TNC Fire Management Manual.

• Experience in operating various types of equipment is necessary.

• Must be capable of obtaining relevant licenses or certifications as required, including First Aid and CPR.

• Possess a valid driver's license.

• Adhere to TNC’s Auto Safety Program.

• Complete a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of motor vehicle records.

• Successfully pass The Nature Conservancy's background screening process.
