Bioinformatics Analyst II

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Assist in the development efforts to enhance and maintain Theiagen's bioinformatics solutions.

• Ensure the reliability and core functionality of software utilized in pathogen genomics.

• Lead the development and execution of training workshops, which includes preparing materials, coordinating logistics, and communicating with external partners.

• Act as the subject matter expert for external partners and provide support for genomic investigations, including pathogen outbreaks.

• Ensure compliance with and continuous enhancement of internal training and support practices.

• Serve as a liaison between partners and the development team by translating partner requirements into actionable implementation.

• Update the Public Health Team Lead regarding project statuses, challenges, milestones, and other critical information.

• Mentor junior team members, promoting learning and technical excellence.

⛳️ Requirements

• A Master's or Doctoral degree in bioinformatics, biostatistics, computer science, microbiology, molecular biology, or a related discipline.

• Proven expertise in applying bioinformatics tools and workflows to resolve complex biological inquiries, especially in the field of pathogen genomics.

• Advanced skills in genome assembly, annotation, taxonomic classification, and antimicrobial resistance detection.

• In-depth understanding of statistical methods and bioinformatics pipelines for next-generation sequencing (NGS) data analysis.

• Proficiency in genomic epidemiology techniques, including phylogenetics, outbreak investigation tools, and MLST typing.

• Capability to independently manage and lead multiple projects, either solo or within a collaborative team setting.

• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, along with experience in presenting technical findings to varied audiences.

• Advanced problem-solving abilities and sound judgment with minimal supervision.

• Strong motivation and a proven track record in public health initiatives.

• Preferred: Extensive knowledge of public health laboratory processes and workflows, including the validation and verification of bioinformatics workflows.

• Preferred: Expertise in interpreting bioinformatics results and delivering actionable insights for public health.

• Preferred: Significant experience in analyzing pathogen genomics datasets for public health purposes.

• Preferred: Advanced experience with cloud-based bioinformatics platforms such as Terra.bio and Galaxy, as well as workflow orchestration tools like Nextflow, WDL, or Snakemake.

• Preferred: Practical expertise in visualization and reporting tools.

• Preferred: Proficiency in shell scripting and working within UNIX/Linux environments.

• Preferred: Leadership experience in mentoring junior team members.

• Must be able to provide proof of eligibility to work in the US upon hire; sponsorship is not available at this time.
