Backend Engineer, Distributed Systems

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Design and implement fundamental backend and distributed systems components.

• Engage in durable execution, state management, messaging, storage, concurrency, and fault tolerance.

• Create low-latency, highly dependable systems capable of functioning at a large scale.

• Enhance the performance, scalability, and resilience of the Restate runtime.

• Contribute to the architecture and ongoing development of Restate’s core platform.

• Develop systems for dependable real-world production operations.

• Diagnose and resolve complex distributed systems and production challenges.

• Improve observability, testing, failure management, and operational reliability.

• Collaborate across application code and infrastructure.

• Partner with engineering teams that are building production systems using Restate.

• Transform real-world technical challenges into product enhancements.

• Create reference implementations, integrations, and tools where beneficial.

• Participate in technical discussions, design reviews, and architectural decisions.

• Convert recurring technical challenges into reusable systems, tools, and documentation.

• Assist in defining engineering practices as the team and product evolve.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive backend engineering experience in building production systems.

• Familiarity with distributed systems, event-driven architectures, or systems involving concurrency, state, messaging, and failure management.

• Proficient in at least one backend programming language; Rust, Go, Java, C++, or similar are particularly relevant.

• Experience in designing, building, and operating production software at scale.

• Strong understanding of software reliability, performance, and system architecture.

• Experience with distributed databases, workflow engines, messaging systems, or infrastructure software (a plus).

• Familiarity with Rust or other systems programming languages (a plus).

• Experience with Kubernetes and cloud infrastructure (a plus).

• Background in storage engines, networking, or low-level systems (a plus).

• Experience in rearchitecting or migrating production systems (a plus).

• Contributions to open-source projects or experience in building developer-facing infrastructure (a plus).

• Ability to articulate technical concepts clearly through design documents, architectural discussions, and code.

• High sense of ownership and the ability to excel in an early-stage environment.

• Capability to work directly with engineers to comprehend and address real-world technical issues.
