Backend Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, and maintain backend services utilizing Ruby and Ruby on Rails.

• Create secure, scalable REST APIs that support Platform and product teams.

• Develop reusable services and shared backend functionalities.

• Write clean, maintainable, and thoroughly tested code.

• Enhance backend architecture, scalability, and performance.

• Construct reusable libraries and services that benefit multiple engineering teams.

• Engage in platform modernization and technical architecture projects.

• Contribute to service reliability and operational excellence.

• Integrate with both internal and external enterprise systems.

• Design secure authentication and authorization frameworks.

• Maintain API contracts and ensure comprehensive documentation.

• Facilitate service-to-service communication and manage distributed architectures.

• Develop automated tests and actively participate in code reviews.

• Support CI/CD pipelines and automation of deployments.

• Troubleshoot production issues and engage in incident response activities.

• Monitor service performance and implement improvements for reliability.

• Support the VA.gov Platform, delivering digital services to millions of Veterans.

⛳️ Requirements

• U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident (Required).

• Capability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.

• Bachelor’s Degree.

• 10 years of experience as a Backend or Full Stack Engineer.

• Strong proficiency in Ruby and Ruby on Rails.

• Experience in designing and implementing RESTful APIs.

• Familiarity with PostgreSQL or other relational databases.

• Experience in integrating with external APIs and services.

• Understanding of background job processing (e.g., Sidekiq).

• Proficiency in Git and GitHub workflows.

• Experience in writing automated tests (RSpec preferred).

• Knowledge of distributed systems and service-oriented architecture.

• Experience in Agile software development environments.

• Must have reliable internet access that enables effective telecommuting.
