Backend Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.

📋 Description

• Collaborate within a cross-functional Payments team alongside mobile, web, and machine learning/data science teams.

• Partner with Engineering Managers, Product Managers, Product Designers, and Engineers to identify challenges and devise solutions.

• Write high-quality, well-organized, and comprehensible code utilized by over 1M active daily users.

• Adopt agile practices and focus on user-centered approaches.

• Engage in blameless post-mortems, architecture evaluations, and engineering guild meetings.

• Work closely with engineers on a daily basis to troubleshoot issues and develop code.

• Handle backend and data-related tasks using Scala and Python.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience as a Backend Software Engineer.

• Background in software engineering.

• Strong capability to effectively learn Depop’s Scala stack.

• Proficiency in writing high-quality code in TypeScript, Scala, Java, Kotlin, or another JVM language.

• Openness to work across various paradigms and languages, including Scala and Python.

• Familiarity with relational databases, preferably PostgreSQL.

• Experience with NoSQL databases, ideally DynamoDB.

• Proven track record in building scalable web applications.

• Understanding of DevOps culture.

• Ability to independently identify and resolve complex problems while knowing when to seek assistance.

• Product-focused mindset aimed at addressing genuine business challenges.

• Experience with iterative development processes, including A/B testing.

• Strong communication skills, both technical and non-technical.

• Competence in unit and integration testing.

• Experience with either relational or non-relational databases.

• Familiarity with TypeScript and Scala.

• Bonus: Knowledge of payment SDKs like Stripe or PayPal.

• Bonus: Experience in the marketplace or fintech sectors.

• Bonus: Familiarity with the Play framework.

• Bonus: Background in eCommerce.

• Bonus: Experience with event-driven architectures, preferably Kafka.
